Hypothyroidism / Hashimotos / receding hairline

Hi everyone,

Ive been on here before asking about Hashimotos which I have just found out I have.

New question .... my hairline is moving so far backwards its frightening! I know general hair loss is a symptom of Hashis but anyone out there just finding their hairline is affected? Im worried Im going to end up looking like Friar Tuck :( At this stage the body of my hair is ok but my hair line is definitely a lot thinner and Im struggling to do anything with my hair in the morning to cover the big forehead I now have!!

Hi are you on any medication? I thought hair loss stopped when you took the appropriate medication. Is it just your hair line or are you having hair loss all over?

I've been on medication for 4 years for hypo and my hair is still thinning. It seems sometimes to have a growth spurt, reaches a couple of inches long and then falls out. It's almost the worst thing about hypothyroidism tbh. Apart from the crashing tiredness and all over body ache and lack of get up and go. I'm not sure there are any standards about what effects hypothyroidism has on people, nor on what constitutes acceptable levels of TSH and T4/3. Do you feel as though the medication is controlling your hypo? Or could you still be too low?

Also my sister has just discovered (she also has hashimoto's and hypo) that there is this syndrome called low T3, which means that no matter how much T4 you shovel in, it doesn't get converted to T3 and is therefore useless. So you could end up with clinically normal TSH and T4 but still be short on T3.

Hi everyone. Im not on meds yet. Off to an endo at the end of the month. My GP doesnt think I need to be on anything yet as its only early days but I have had so many symptoms for the last couple of years and been put on various other medications that werent required that I will be fighting him on this one.

Im just worried that the receding part wont regrow. I havent noticed any hair loss in the body of my hair. Just around the front and my side fringe is now looking a bit weedy and thin. Actually maybe there is a bit of hair loss all over as I sometimes wonder why my hair seems to have no bounce and sticks close to my head. Thought it was because it was a bit longer then usual (too scared to cut any off as its so slow growing!) and the weight was maybe holding it down?

Anyone had hashis and only noticed the most hair loss around the front?

I have a widow's peak (I've lost less in the middle, quite a bit on either side). As far as I know it doesnt regrow, but there may be things which help. My hair has always been really thick so having some fall out is a good thing. It's the frizz that I hate, and I was hoping to put off the grey for a bit longer!

Glad you have your diagnosis, mummybear1, and I hope you see a helpful endocrinologist. I need to make an appointment with GP and see if I can have an endo referral as the tiny amount of thyroxine I can take (without sending me hyper) doesn't help much at all with symptoms. It is the low energy, difficulty losing weight and feeling cold I hate most.

If your endo has the magic solution, let the rest of us know! Grin

I'm amazed that with a TSH of 15 your GP hasn't seen fit to treat and/or refer you quickly. Thryoid problems are dealt with so badly in this country.

My hair became really thin before I was first diagnosed, I used to wear a cap all the time to cover it up.

However, after a few months of taking Levothyroxine it all grew back fine and it is now as thick and abundant as ever (in fact so much so, that when having laser treatment for other facial hair, I had my hairline neatened up too!)

Actually while it is thin, having it cut shorter may help, I find my hair always looks more bouncy and full when shorter as you say, it doesn't get weighed down so much.

I too think its crap that your GP isn't treating you, even with a low dose, making you wait until the end of the month is unacceptable. When my GP (well locum actually, my own GP couldn't have been less interested!) got my test results back he called me in immediately (as in "can you get here in the next 10 minutes before we close for lunch").

Hi there,

Firstly, I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid when I was 11. It then went into a Hashimotos diagnosis when I was about 18.

To answer your question, I have EXACTLY THE SAME symptoms as you. My thyroid levels are stable but still my fringe hairline is getting thinner and thinner. So depressing.
I hope you find some kind of solution mate

Hi!

I've had the SAME EXACT THING happening to me over the past 4 years since on thyroid meds. The past year it went from thinning to receding. No one would notice since I had a ton of hair to start with, but My forehead is getting quite bigger😬.I heard about how the thyroid meds can have an opposite effect and have the same hormone that causes men to recede and bald 😬. So I just quit my meds cold turkey as I'm seeing my homeopathy doc
To help balance hormones. I'll let ya know if it works. I'm very hopeful! Have any of you found any answers yet??
