Don't laugh, but is it possible to rupture a cs scar through coughing??

I've had 3 cs, the last one 16 months ago. For the last few days I've had a hacking cough and now my scar is hurting again. There's a bit of it that feels like maybe I've pulled something which hurts when I cough, but also, I can now feel my scar all the time.

So, 1. Is it possible to rupture a well healed scar after this amount of time by coughing?

  1. How would I know?
  1. What should I do?!

After three cs it's very likely you have some adhesions which will be put under stress from the coughing. You are not going to burst open. Can you try to support the scar quite firmly with your hands when you cough?

Hope the cough goes soon.

Thank you for the reassurance! It's not so much bursting open Grin as wondering if one of the internal layers could rupture or something? But I guess I'm just overthinking it!

It is possible to get an incisional hernia after abdominal ops (I've had one after having had several ops) - it doesn't sound as if you have got that (mine appeared as a very prominent bulge in my abdomen just above my scar) - but thought I'd mention it as something to be aware of. Not to worry you - because yours sounds as if you're just still feeling the kind of post op pulling that tends to hang around for a while!

Anyway - if you do feel as if something has popped out at all, see the GP, - my hernia was easily fixed as out patient day surgery and hasn't troubled me since. Smile

Thank you kurri, that is helpful. I've woken this morning with a constant nagging pain inside. I feel like I want to put pressure on it to kind of protect it IYSWIM. Nothing's popped out though.

I've had anadin and some codeine (a bit later) but it's still there.

I guess if I've pulled something it'll just gradually heal again now my cough is easing?

Don't know if it's any help but I'm having a lot of post op pain at present and relate to the nagging ( tho if feels more like a nag has kicked me ! ) pain and pulling sensation .

With mine ,apart from painkillers ,I find supporting the area with my hands or a well positioned pillow ,gentle heat from a hot water bottle ,lying on my back or sitting up at night all help . But most effective is not moving .

I doubt you can get away with the last one if you have little ones ...but is there any way you can rest up today ?

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

thank you for the flowers ginger. Yes, you're right, supporting it with a pillow feels kind of protective. And no, rest isn't really an option with 3 kids Smile

I'll look forward to being still once they've all gone to bed tonight.

Get well soon to you!
