Posted in pregnancy but desperately need advice

I'm 39+5 pregnant with first born and 10 days ago, had a small car accident involving someone hitting the car I was in. They've accepted responsibility and the impact was not massively significant however I got checked out at a&e to be on the safe side and everything was fine.
Since the accident, I have consistently woken up in the early hours with numb fingers on one hand and pain in each hip. At first I didn't related this to the accident and thought it had been the way I was lying while sleeping etc. I've had to get up today at stupid o clock because the pain is tremendously bad. My hips are in agony and the numbness in my fingers appears to be travelling up my arm.

Can anyone tell me of they've ever had something similar towards the end of their pregnancy or if I should get myself to the GP ASAP?

Any/all advice massively appreciated and excuse typos on phone!

Never had this in my pregnancy. If you are at all concerned get yourself down to your gp. It's important that you do this, both for your general health, and in case it gets so bad that you need to make a claim against the other side's insurer. Hth.

Regardless of the cause of your symptoms I would get yourself checked out ASAP.

If you can't get a gp apt for today go to a walk in centre or A & E. Numbness in fingers esp needs to be looked at.

Because of your late stage of pregnancy your joints will have started to loosen up so it is likely the bump may have trapped a nerve. See your go, you might need a bit of phsyio. Don't worry.

yes I had achey hips and could not get comfortable to sleep. I also had pregnancy related carpel tunnel syndrome (numb hands/wrists) at the end too. I would still get checked out though

Distrustinggirlnow · 24/09/2013 07:43

Not sure about your hips, I think I remember the hips thing in later pg, but the numbness I would get checked out as I had this following an accident and it had been caused by whiplash and I had physio to release it.

Which fingers are numb?

BeansAndCheese · 24/09/2013 07:47

I had a pinched nerve in my lower back/hip area. It gave me a numb patch about the size of my stretched out hand on the front of my leg. Very odd. I told a community midwife who gave me a puzzled look and gave me the 'if its not gone 6 weeks after the birth etc etc...' speech. It's most likely just because all of your joints are loosening up ready to deliver and women are prone to things like carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnancy. Go get yourself checked out though if you are really worried. It cant hurt to be cautious.

You should get checked out with your GP.

Numb fingers on one hand could well be a trapped nerve (ulnar nerve if it's the fourth and fifth fingers) and treatment appears to be "wait and see if it gets better on its own" followed by surgery if it doesn't. But it could be carpal tunnel syndrome (which is common in late pregnancy anyway and probably not related to the accident).

It's my thumb and first two fingers in my right hand if that means anything??

It means it's probably not the ulnar nerve, so that eliminates one thing... Grin

More usefully, it suggests compression of the radial nerve. Check it out with your GP.
