Will standing up for shortish periods really stop my broken foot from healing?

Have a displaced fracture of my 5th metatarsal (last week) and in am a non-weight-bearing cast.

Am taking like a lot easier than normal - but still doing some stuff - putting on the washing, cooking, paperwork. DH works from home, DCs at school.

DH is an awful, awful, awful nurse - in that he gets really frustrated if I do absolutely anything which is not sitting down. He thinks that the longer I spend standing up the longer my foot will take to heal and I may increase the possibility I will need surgery. Even that I may damage my foot permanently.

Today I have mostly been sitting down. A couple of car journeys (automatic) and maybe 1-2 hours total pottering around upright.

Is he right? Or is he just projecting onto me how he would spend 6 weeks if he was in a cast.

Please help before I keeeellllllll him and his insistence that I sit down Grin

I don't know. What were you told by the doctors?

FishfingersAreOK · 23/09/2013 19:59

Didn't see an Dr - only a nurse and a sister. They were lovely but didn't say much on the rest side...more stuff like how to use the crutches, not to get it wet, not to put weight on the cast and to go back if felt tingly!

Tell DH he is being ridiculous. You're fine to get up and about a bit as long as you don't go mad. The bone will heal, and a little bit of movement at a fracture site is not a problem - it actually encourages healing! You're more likely to get a serious problem like a DVT if you sit round doing nothing for three weeks...
