3 year old with an ear ache and I've already given him calpol is it ok to give him neurofen as well? I think I've done this in the past, but can't remember?

yes you can

VVVQV · 21/06/2006 20:23

You can do (although its preferable not to if possible).

quietlydevastated · 21/06/2006 20:26

yes but I think the idea is that you give nurofen 2 hours after calpol so that they have something every 2 hours (instead of waiting 4 hours) and thus giving a constant blanket of pain relief.

Warm hot water bottles held against the ear worked well with my dd1 at the same age with lots of cuddling. It seemed to do nothing and then all of a sudden the pain went...... good luck.

pinkranger · 21/06/2006 20:26

yes, i do them 2 hours apart HTH

SoupDragon · 21/06/2006 20:27

I was told 2 hours apart but you cna give them together (DS1 has had them together in hospital)

Gem13 · 21/06/2006 20:28

I was told by the pharmacist the other day that Nurofen must not be given on an empty stomach.

Not one that I knew, and I can't recall any adverse effects, but I thought I'd pass it on.

louismummy · 21/06/2006 20:47

nurofen on an empty tummy can cause gastric ulcers. you can give both together. but agree with quietlydevastated. re every 2 hours alturnating them hth

JennT · 21/06/2006 21:50

As long as no more than 4 doses of paracetamol (4-6 hours apart)and 3 doses of ibuprofen (6-8hours apart) in 24 hours then doesn't matter when you take them.

NotAnOtter · 21/06/2006 21:51

I was told to do it for temperature in a newborn - so yes!

cosmic101 · 21/06/2006 21:53

yes you can

mabel1973 · 21/06/2006 22:11

yes - we were told by my bro and SIL (both paediatric nurses) when DS had a temp and was shaking - give them half an hour apart.

Only give these drugs to children under 2month (paracetamol) and 4 month (ibuprofen) when prescribed by doctor as they will prescribe correct dose which will be checked by pharmacist when dispensed
