ds is now 13 weeks old and hasn't had a proper poo for 6 days. What he has managed to get out is quite firm and takes an awful lot of effort. Is clearly upset when he tries to push and is starting to take less food. Is fed on Neocate as he is intolerant to formula and breast milk. Health visitor has suggested water but he is really not interested in this. Any suggestions please!

Would it be ok to dilute his formula very slightly, if plain water is ok, why wouldn't this be ok?? Sorry if it's a dumb question!

Joshjunior · 15/02/2004 13:40

zebra - not a dumb question at all, really don't know if there is any reason not to try this. Went to see the duty Dr this am as ds now bleeding when he tries to go (not a lot but is obviously in pain with it)he suggested lactulose but ds is dairy intolerant so really not sure about this one. Can't afford for his feeding to be affected as very underweight for his age already due to previous feeding problems. Anyone had experience of lactulose?

There are a lot of MNet threads about lactulose, don't remember what all they say off-hand but I think it's more usually prescribed for older tots. If I remember right, it's a sugar (like lactose) that feeds the "good" bacteria in the gut, causing them to bulk the stools out & make them softer. Not heard of it for a baby who wasn't on solids already, though. Not sure if that helps!

Thanks for all your advice. You will be pleased to hear that ds managed to clear everything, and I mean everything ! (how can that much stuff come from a 9lb baby?!)All three of us pleased. I think I nearly got piles pushing with him, bless!
Re lactulose - dh phoned the childrens ward who said that in the literature it states caution for those lactose intolerant so probably a good thing we didn't give it to him. Will keep in mind the 'OJ' just in case this happens again.

it may be worth trying colief. my baby was very constipated and only passing pebbles. one day of colief and his poos are now runny and easy to pass. it is put into the bottles of milk to help break it down before they drink it. may need to check with gp though with the intolerance.

Thanks benjaminsmum - will speak to the health visitor tomorrow when he gets weighed.
