how long have you been giving drops? Worried they might mottle my son's teeth

The dentist told me that DS (16mo ) whose teeth get brushed 2 x a day gets enough flouride at the moment purely because he swallows about 80% of the toothpaste - he says the drops may become necessary later, when toothpaste isn't swallowed.

Being American I was very into the idea of giving my children flouride supplements. I repeatedly asked my dentist about it and was discouraged from using them. At about 3 1/2 DD started having trouble with her lower molars despite regular brushing and careful snacking habits. Again I asked if flouride would help. Dentist said no, this was damage that occured before the teeth even came through, nothing I could do about it. At 4 1/2 one of the molars got so bad she had to have a partial filling on it and visits every 3 months to coat the tooth. I finally insisted on a prescription for flouride. At the next visit, 3 months later my dentist remarked on how much stronger and healthier her molars were!!!

My DS, about to turn three has just started them as well.

Thanks for your views - my DS 14 mths already enjoys his teeth brushing routine so at the moment I feel it unnecessary to supplement with drops. I'm off to the dentist next month again, my DS's third visit and I want to be able to tell dentist that I'm not totally convinced as yet! Anyone else with positive view on drops?
