Ds needs glasses

I took ds to the opticians last weekend, don't know exactly why, just felt it would be a good idea. To my surprise it turns out that he needs glasses (talk about maternal instinct! ). I don't have any issues with this, but the optician told me something that I'd never heard before. He said that such a tiny degree of defective vision as ds has can be corrected by wearing glasses only when concentrating, ie not for general play, out-and-about stuff. So we'll be recalled in about 2m to retest ds's vision, and the optician thinks it likely that it will be normal.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

I've been wearing glasses since I was 10 and this is a knew idea to me. I thought that with a tiny degree of myopia it was better to exercise the eyes by not wearing glasses, that using glasses would encourage 'laziness'.

Also, any tips how to get ds to remember when to wear them and when to take them off at school? And how not to lose them?!

NOt had the same expereince as you - but - My DS has been wearing glasses since he was four - the class had there eyes tested and four of them needed glasses - so we got the teacher to remind all four of them to take off there glasses when goping out to play and to remind them to put them on when they come back in - can your get your DS's teacher to do this? We also bought our DS a funky case - to make it more fun! We were told our DS's eyes would improve and for the first two years they did - then they deteriated again - he will always need glasses now, he is 7 - it doesn't bother him - my DH and I also wear glases so it is no big deal to him. I think you just have to go with the flow and wait and see what the next eye test brings as these things have a habit of surprising us with results!

hi pc my son has the exact same thing, i found it quite a shock especially as she said that he would only need them a short time. I try to put them on at home when he's reading and trust the school to make him put them on when he's working.

PrettyCandles,

I am curious as to how it is going. My dd is 3, and needs glasses, as she is mildly myopic. But she is told that she needs to wear her glasses all the time, except for reading.
