Can we get spare pills for my MiL who is here on hol and will run out?

My MIL is staying at the moment and is due to leave Saturday. For various reasons it would work better if she stayed til tues but she hasn't brought enough of her various pills (blood pressure and goodness knows what). I was wondering about calling our dr tomo and asking if they can give her some extra of the pills. She is doubtful that they would do this ... Does anyone have any experience of this?

is she a UK resident? she'd be better of calling her own practice if so. if they have electronic prescriptions set up they could whizz one to your local pharmacy.

Is she visiting from another part of the UK?

I have done this many time when (a few years ago now) I was home from Uni and ran out of meds. Just saw my parents GP as a visiting patient. They do tend to only give you what you need til you get home though.

Also recently phoned 111 at the weekend when down in the West Country as had forgotten my pills, and they sent a perscruption straight to the nearest pharmacy!

They might - I'm guessing she doesn't have the b-side of her repeat prescriptions with her? (This is the tear off bit which you can use to re-order the meds).

You can only ask - it obviously does happen that people need meds unexpectedly whilst away from home.

Does she have the side of her prescription with the medication listed on it with her? (if not always worth carrying in case of emergency anyway!)

I would phone her GP and ask them if they can fax a script over to the local pharmacy? otherwise contact your GP and see if they can help

A pharmacist can give an emergency supply if it's really pressing.

I've done this 3 times . Just forgotten essential meds when away for a couple of days

1. Local GPs refused to see me - had to go to walk in centre. Long wait for NHS prescription
2. Pharmacist agreed to give emergency supply but was going to charge for 'writing a private prescription' £7 per item (I take 4 drugs and he was giving me 2 days supply... £28)
3. Pharmacist said this isn't a problem...I can give you enough for 3 days without need to see a Dr.... That will be £2.56 (cost of drugs) please

Worth phoning the pharmacy first

DH is a pharmacist. 2 options...
1 call own gp and get prescription faxed and original one posted. If its England / Wales it'll get treated as normal. Not sure about Scotland / NI. If EU it will be treated as private and charged accordingly.

Or 1. Ask for an emergency supply at the pharmacist (2-3 days of medicine). Will get charged the private fee.

Thanks. She is British so I guess that makes things slightly easier. Will call her dr, our dr and our pharmacy this morning.

Just to update, I started by popping into the surgery this morning and asked them for advice. The receptionist was totally unphased and just said no problem, we can give her a prescription. I popped back to collect it this afternoon and my MiL now has the mess in her hand. Thanks again for the tips. Good old MN!
