Is there anything that actually works???

I have always had v v painful and heavy periods but the last four have been absolute hell.

As a teenager I tried the pill but it made migraines horrendous and mefenamic acid which did nothing. Feminax worked when I was younger as did ibuprofen but cannot take it now due to stomach problems.

I am anaemic (again) and have spent the last 2 days feeling dizzy/in a trance as have lost so much (sorry tmi but soak 2 pads in an hour). I have dcs to look after and its a struggle being in pain for 6-7 days each month.

Is there anything I can take I am desperate?

I think you should go and see your gp, I've got extremely heavy flow too but I only get mild cramps,

Hope you feel better soon

I was very anaemic due to heavy periods. I was given Mefenamic acid but it didn't help. I was then given tranexamic acid which has been brilliant. It's really cut down the flow and made my periods about 2 days less a month. They've made such a difference and I'm so cross with myself that I didn't go to the dr sooner.

There are lots of things which can be done so please go and see your Dr.

I will go and see gp in the morning. I've got to the point where I just can't manage with this pain and inconvenience each month.

The first 5 days I am virtually housebound they are so heavy and I am constantly needing to be close to a bathroom. I have not heard of tranexamic acid and might ask gp if I can try it.

Thankyou

Maybe ask to try Diclofenac sodium. It worked beautifully for me when Mefanamic acid didn't.

Did you manage to get an appt cantsleep?

You really shouldn't be having to put up with 5 days a month where you're housebound. That's awful.

I second tranexamic acid along with mefanamic acid, the two combined have made a massive difference to me. Mefanamic acid on its own didn't touch much.
Good luck.

All this could well point to endometriosis being the underlying cause; it is a common cause of severe period pain. It can also cause heaviness as well.

I would also suggest you keep a daily pain and symptom diary as this will give them clues as to why this is happening.

I would insist to your GP most strongly that you are referred to a gynae asap to find out exactly what is going on. This needs further investigation to determine the CAUSE. In my experience some GPs are completely not up to date or speed when it comes to such issues (speaking as someone who has also suffered from v painful periods for many years, the cause in my case was endometriosis).

Its all very well trying to treat the symptoms but you really need to find out WHY this is happening as well. Those tablets may be just a short term solution to a long term problem.

www.endo.org.uk may be of some use to you as well.
