So embaressed ! Anyone had scabies?

I feel horrible talking about this.
On Sunday I woke up with a red pimply rash allover my hands and feet. It started to gradually go up my legs and arms.
I thought it could be heat rash but I generally don't suffer with heat related rashes.
In the afternoon it had gone fron my legs and mostly gone from my arms. But on my hands it wasn't red anymore but was more like blisters. Hives I thought.
Went to GP yesterday and she said she wasn't sure but it could be scabies. Promptly prescribed something and couldn't get rid of me fast enough. No explanation as to how or why or whether to treat whole family,
Got the Derbak (?) and put it on myself at 7pm. It has to stay on for 24 hours.
As an organic person I was reluctant to smother myself in this yuk but did it as I felt sick at the thought of this horrid thing.
Today I am itching like ma and had very little sleep last night because of it too.

Can someone please enlighten me about this?
I feel like a leopor in my own home! Don't feel confident enough to talk to friends about it.

Anyone can catch scabies, there's no reason to feel like a leper and there's no reason to feel ashamed. It spreads very quickly, often without contact, and it's becoming more and more common too.

There's some information about it \link{http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/scabies.htm\here} that might help.

My friends all got this after a weekend away - luckily I escaped. I know that you have to put the lotion everywhere and wear it for 24 hours along with the rest of the family and then you get rid of it. Poor thing!! You have my full sympathies and hopefully it will have gone soon.

gladbag · 13/06/2006 14:42

Poor you. I completely sympathise, having been there myself. Have a look at \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=153346#3226658\this thread} for more info and fellow sufferers...

I had this when I was about 14, spent weeks itching and couldnt sleep, ripping the skin on my legs raw. Had my mum helpfully telling me it was a Hash-Rash...I was obvioulsy allergic to all the weed id been smoking Grin
Went to doctors, he said it was scabies and was in the area, put the cream on, had to reapply after washing hands etc and have never itched as much since!!!!

foxinsocks · 13/06/2006 14:54

you can take an antihistamine for the itchiness

I was always under the impression that you had to treat all of you (especially anyone who's been sharing your bed)

charliecat · 13/06/2006 14:54

yep my mum had to do it too even though she hadnt been manically itching

KBear · 13/06/2006 14:55

I had this once - after sleeping in a hotel bed. Awful. Once treated it will go, don't be ashamed although expect people in RL to be horrified!!!! so don't tell them!

Miaou · 13/06/2006 14:57

Yes you must treat everyone
Wash all your bedding at a high temperature
Vaccuum all the carpets
The itching will take a little longer to subside (a few days) - you don't want to know why Wink
And don't be embarrassed - I got it and so did dd2 and we only found out when the gp diagnosed it. He reassured me it was really common and "there is no need to hang the slaughtered lamb outside the front door any more" Grin

Hi there,
I got scabies when I was a teaching student and it was horrid - so itchy and very embarrasing.
Our whoel flat had to be treated, including all towels and bedclothes. My dh (boyfriend back then) caught it but no-one else did.
hope you feel better soon

3catstoo · 13/06/2006 16:31

Thank you all for replying so quickly.
My embaressment came from my Mum saying 'I thought only dirty people got that@. Thanks Mum !!
I have 3 children and DH, they are all rash free - should I still treat them? If so should I do their hair?

Goodness knows where I got it from as I haven't heard of it for years.

I shall be looking at all my friends very closely now !!! Grin

I took Piriton at 12.30 and am itching again now. yuk!!

Thanks for your help.

Just spoke to DH and he is not going to be treated as the gp wasn't certain if it was scabies.
I guess if it is then I'll have it again in a couple of weeks from him.

I had this from staying at an x boyfriends mattress, wasnt with him long and boy did it itch. My mother made me feel dirty and yes everything had to be washed and had to put the stuff on even on genetals as told they can go there (I add that it didnt go there but had to do every bit of me)

3catstoo · 14/06/2006 09:38

Well Dh finally gave in and applied the lotion last night. I did the 3 children before bed last night.
Lets hope that's the end of it.

Many thanks
