so I woke up last Wednesday with slightly achey upper right arm.
sort of like a dead, dull ache.
thought maybe I had slept on it and it would improve but I has gotten worse everyday since then and I am now in agony!
it does tend to ease slightly during the day but at night it is chronic and I have been up since one this morning.
also over the last two days it has started to spread to my neck, shoulder and lower arm and hand.
could this be something to do with the fact that I am 20 weeks pregnant as I have never had this before.

go see your gp. it may be muscular but it could be a concerning sign (blood clot or something).

VivaLeBeaver · 15/07/2013 06:32

Does your hospital have a self referral pregnancy assessment centre? If not can you contact the labour ward yourself?

You need to see someone. Pain like this isn't normal and there's a chance you could have a dvt in your arm, though they're very uncommon. But please get checked out. Like wise you may have pulled a muscle but get it seen in real life.

the thing is my doctors surgery is absolutely crap now and you cant get an appointment with one of the regular doctors unless you book a month in advance! the last couple of times I have been there I had this temporary, fill in doctor.
he has some sort of accent that I find really difficult to understand and its really embarrassing for us both as I keep asking him to repeat himself.
also, althiugh he seems lovely and has a good bedside manner he has been rubbish(sent my son home saying he was just bruised after falling off a swing, turned out he'd actually broken his elbow!)
im not too worried about having a blood clot as I have mild von willibrands disorder.

You still need to see a dr though, and even if you don't like him, he he is still the dr available to you.

I would suggest if you dislike him that much then change your GP surgery, as especially having children, it's going to be emergency appointments you're going to need, rather than prebookable ones.

I also wouldn't be too dismissive of a blood clot, but it could be a trapped nerve too, i had one of these when i was pregnant and it was a bitch. I hope you're feeling better soon.

PseudoBadger · 15/07/2013 07:18

Could also be carpal tunnel? Mine started (when pregnant first time) with pain in the upper arm. It's worst at night.

urtwistingmymelonman · 15/07/2013 07:20

I was thinking trapped nerve as it feels very similar to when I have trapped a nerve in my back before.
only this time its getting worse instead of easing.
I know you cant do much for a trapped nerve but what sort of painkillers can be prescribed when pregnant?
ive been taking paracetamol but these are not helping much.

Not sure but could it be a torn rotator cuff (shoulder)?

My mum has just had that and it's excruciating. I presume if it's bad enough the pain could spread some way.

Definitely see your GP - are there others at your surgery you could ask for? If you don't want to mention three language thing, ask if you can see as female doctor - no one is likely to query that.

urtwistingmymelonman · 15/07/2013 07:25

I had thought carpal tunnel too badger but thought that started in the hand or wrist?
what kind of treatment can you receive for carpal tunnel?

Mine started just above the elbow and moved up to shoulder and down to hand. I was on holiday and had no idea what it was and it was very painful.
You can get splints for your wrists to keep them at an angle and take paracetemol, that's it really.

urtwistingmymelonman · 15/07/2013 08:32

oh no! At least it's not something more dangerous or pregnancy related. Guess it's lots of taking it easy for you :-)

changeforthebetter · 16/07/2013 07:17

I had some awful shoulder pain with 1st pg. I can't remember the cause but it was bad enough to stop me sleeping and was pg related. Glad you have an appointment. Always better to get these things checked out Smile
