End of tether re lost referral

At the end of April, my GP referred me for a sigmoidoscopy as a precaution. He said it would be a 1-2 week wait until the procedure.

By the end of May I'd heard nothing. So I thought I'd save an appointment and write GP a letter chasing it up. I handed this in over the reception counter addressed to my GP. Heard nothing.

End of June, I went and saw a different GP. No appointments available with my own GP as on holiday. 2nd GP said leave it with him and if I hadn't heard within 2 weeks then to phone my own GP.

As you guessed, heard nothing. After 2 weeks I spoke to reception who passed me to the secretary who deals with referrals. She has tried to chase it up but apparently the private company who do these tests don't get back to her. Twice I've asked her to get back to me by the end of the day, either way, even if she hasn't any progress to report. She never phones back.

So it's now nearly 3 months since the original GP made the original referral. Have I run out of options? I can see why people give up, I'm hitting brick walls wherever I turn.

Interestingly I was referred for a separate issue about 3 weeks ago and that is not a private company (NHS outsourcing) and that came through straightaway).

This must be really frustrating for you, was it a 2 week wait urgent referral, or was the GP just estimating and could have got it wrong?

Either way, it's terrible service. I would be contacting PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) they are good at sorting out stuff like this. Also keep badgering your GP.
