bloating affects my quality of life

I have periods of painful bloating, particularly when I am on holiday and my eating pattern changes.

I am on holiday now and it has almost ruined it Sad

I have to lie down and undo my clothes as they feel so tight. I also feel lethargic and low sex drive because it makes me feel fat and unattractive. I even feel 'flu like' at times.

It is after I eat, even just a small portion

What are you eating that's causing the bloating?

I felt like that a lot before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. I would have to lay down I felt so awful. It was lactose intolerance that was the root cause. Took me quite a while to work it out though.

I feel like this when i eat bread. Have you looked at your diet? I would make an appt to see gp - it may be ibs

Pasta and rice seem to be the worse culprits. The last few holidays haven't been so bad but this one has been hard with it.

I was also like this before coeliac diagnosis.

NothingsLeft · 12/07/2013 08:31

I had massive lethargy after eating gluten and would almost fall asleep at the table. I won't be able to talk and had to lay down asap.

Is it only on holiday?

middleclassdystopia · 12/07/2013 10:42

No sometimes at home too, but more so on holiday. But then I eat more gluten on holiday as I indulge a bit more.

What other symptoms for Coeliac?

I also get constipation and diarrhoea, stomach cramps. I am a little overweight, I thought Coeliacs tended to be underweight?

They are all symptoms. I was a little overweight before diagnosis. I had always been slim before but couldn't shift the extra 10lbs no matter what I did.

I also suffered from mild depression, had transient nausea and occasional gripe type stomach pains. I had carpel tunnel type pain in my hands and feet. All went after being gluten free for a while. Coeliac UK have some good info.

You could ask the GP for a blood test, although some coeliacs are deficient in the antigen they look for (IgA deficiency), so an endoscopy is the gold standard. My bloods have always been negative. You need to keep eating gluten in the meantime though.

Might be the travelling that has made it worse? have you been stuck in a car/plane seat for ages?

middleclassdystopia · 12/07/2013 18:08

Yes loooong car journey, might be that. Thanks for your advice

I get cramps if I eat too many onions and certain lettuce. I'm ok with salad leaves but iceberg and round lettuce rip my guts apart. I sometimes have gripe type stomach pains from other foods. Coeliac blood test came back ok.

I too had similar and discovered can't eat gluten but it took me years to work out.
I've also started taking a newish probiotic called Symprove that is meant to transform lives with IBS which I don't know if I have but I look bloated often. I definitely think it's helping
