I think erratic and sometimes heavy periods are usual. Also maybe being hormonal so mood swings etc.

Some people go through premature menopause. When did you last have a smear?

Auntymandy · 06/06/2006 13:48

I am under the hospital for that and had one last month

OP posts:
singersgirl · 06/06/2006 13:55

How old are you? I am nearly 40 (next month) and think I am perimenopausal - my Mum was 45 when she had her menopause, so it's quite possible for me.

I have erratic periods in terms of heaviness and length - sometimes 3 days, sometimes 7 days, sometimes very heavy for a day, sometimes very light. My cycle is normally only about 23 days now, but every so often I'll go 6 weeks.

Because of the heavy bleeding/clots I had a scan a year ago to check for fibroids or other uterine abnormalities, but all looked fine then. Am going back to GP tomorrow coz of breakthrough bleeding.

That list of symptoms looks quite alarming though....

poppyknot · 06/06/2006 13:59

Auntmandy - I had a 'last forever' period a couple of months ago and feared it might be an early sign of an early m/p.

Went to the drs and chickened out of asking whether it was this or not. He just said that erratic sometimes happens. He didn't mention the poss of its being the m/p. Hasn't repeated so am hoping that it was a blip, as it were.

Apparently the age your mother or grandmothers go through the m/p is a good indicator.

Out of interest, what age are you? I am 42 so that would be earlyish. I don't think my sisters are going through it and they are 5 years older.

Auntymandy · 06/06/2006 14:00

good luck for tomorrow!
I am 40.
Mum was turned 60 before she hit the big M!!!
My periods are usually on the dot. Bit heavy, but not too bad.
The last one never really got going lots of dark bllod for a fe days. then that was it then about a week later same again, its gone on for about 2 weeks now. little clots big clots, dark blood and bright red blood! no real pain.
Miscarried last August.

I would go to the GP and get it checked out. They may want to do a scan for fibroids etc. Sorry to hear about your m/c. Is there any possibility this could be related to that?

Auntymandy · 06/06/2006 14:08

I did wonder, but its almost a year ago now!

OP posts:
figroll · 06/06/2006 17:31

Me too - over a year and I am 43.

Auntymandy · 07/06/2006 09:53

figroll..whats over a year?

OP posts:
figroll · 08/06/2006 14:47

Ha ha - sorry - I didn't read your post properly! Silly me - it made me laugh though. I am sometimes in a terrible hurry and I don't read things properly, but I am leisurely today. I meant to say - I haven't had a period for over a year and I am 43. So you can go through the menopause in your early 40s. I was a bit upset about it at first, but I think it is fab now. Funny but I finished around the time when my dd started!

I had very odd periods for about 3 years before they stopped altogether and I used to feel very hormonal, but I didn't have a period. I used to get period pains when I wasn't menstruating. I had hot flushes and still do particularly in this hot weather, but I don't have them at night. I had some nasty clotting periods, but only one or two. I feel like I have just come out of a tunnel - I felt quite low for sometime and I think this was the menopause. I no longer have ups and downs and I am just always the same now.

Sorry about the silly post!

singersgirl · 08/06/2006 18:05

Figroll, mine are getting very odd now - will be 40 in a month. GP wasn't that bothered about between cycle bleeding and said it was probably hormonal. She did advise me to get a smear just in case I've developed a polyp (2 years since last smear and no history of abnormal smears).
