ds 11mths was walking when he slipped and banged his cheek bone on a glass coffee table, it has bruised already and has only just stopped crying. i have given him some calpol is there anything else i need to do?

Put on a cold compress or frozen pea packet to help reduce swelling, poor thing was it on the corner?

ice yes .. calpol good .. arnica has been proved to have a placebo effect only

it was on the edge, he tried to pick something up off the floor and walk at the same time and stood on his hands i think. hes soo enthusiastic to do things he needs to calm down a bit.

why are you worried about putting him to bed ? has he not calmed down fully yet?

i've always been told not to let people sleep when they have hit there head, maybe old wives tail not sure.
hes just winging, he will be off in the bath soon.

anyway the signs to look out for with head bumps are nausea, unconsciousness and not screaming or bruising

Nice link, Twig. Just out of interest though, the review looked at homeopathic applications of arnica (ie in dilution from the 'mother tincture'). I wonder if the claims also apply to very much more concentrated (ie. traditional 'herbal' type applications) of a very pure form of arnica IYSWIM...

I've never understood the homeopathic dilution / notation thang... but that study stills sounds like it is examining cream preparations formulated homeopathically (ie. a tiny little bit of pure arnica goes a very long way) rather than 'smack a shed load of very concentrated arnica on' IYSWIM.

I'm surprised by the reasearch findings tbh I swear by the stuff and my patients I recommend it to all come back with good reports.

I'm with Twig on this one. Over here they live off homeopathic remedies and not one of them bloody work! I've tried them for my hayfever, I might as well have taken sweets for all the good it did (yes I did read the instructions!), and ds's creché have Arnica on standby but it never stops him coming home covered in bruises!

comester, but if you told them to go home and ask their dp to massage their lower back (assuming some weirdy meridian line of energy chakra alignment means nerve endings in the jaw can be soothed and calmed by extended gentle massage around the tailbone or whatever) your patients would get the same benefit.

arnica cream is a naturally based gel which brings out bruising and limits swelling. Great stuff to ahve around for all those knocks you inevitably are about to encounter.

arnica cream is a homeopathic solution that has been fairly widely discredited as having anything other than a placebo effect

(yes I believed in it with first c-section, but didn't use it with 2nd and had no difference in bruising / scarring)

Isn't is possible for the preparations to exist in two concentrations - one homeopathic one where it is diluted to nth degree, and another hardcore / pure / extracted one (ie with loads of helenalin) which actually does something IYSWIM ?

The studies seem to discredit homeopathic treatments using it (which is fine by me), but don't seem to address the specific point, which is 'does helenalin actually do anything useful re: bruising'...
