Itchy scalp - any treatment recommendations?

My scalp is really itchy (put money on it being thyroid related). I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for treatments? Shampoo etc? So many things out there that it would be good to have an idea of something that has at least worked for someone. Thanks :)

Have you tried Head and Shoulders Itchy Scalp shampoo?

DD 17 had a lot of problems with her scalp, mainly due to stress, hers was flaking as well as being itchy. I looked in Boots at the various treatments I could buy and this seemed the most gentle to start with. It has really helped.

Hope it works for you Smile.

There have been a couple of threads on this recently. Phillip Kingsley shampoo is good but expensive, the L'oreal shampoo in a dark blue bottle is quite good, and Nixoral and Oilatum work well.

Thanks Monikar, I will give this a shot. :) Glad that it has helped your DD.

*Nizoral

I've tried everything. Oilatum Insensive is the best I have found for me, but I think it needs to be a bit of trial and error.

My hairdresser recommended acupuncture - she said she went for her eczema. It does help a lot.

I tried lots of different anti-itch shampoos before I realised the sodium laureth sulphate in all the shampoos was causing the problem.
I use Earth Friendly baby shampoo which is hypoallergenic. Not a total cure, but lots better than it was.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/06/2013 13:50

nizoral is good, but do a nit check too!

Justonemorebiteplease · 26/06/2013 15:50

I agree with hedwig. I suffered for years with an itchy scalp, and spend a fortune trying to find a solution. My saviour was the L'Oreal ever sleek range, it's sulfate free and my scalp felt better fom the first use - I highly recommend it Grin

Thank you for all of the suggestions :)

Agree with switching to SLS free Shampoo. Sainsburys stock the Happy Hair Days range which is SLS free and still lathers well.

My dh had an itchy scalp and psoriasis and his was cured by lush shampoo. I think it was one of their shampoo bars that was best, they will advise and give samples if you ask in store.

L'oreal dark blue bottle with orange lid !

TinaSurrey · 27/06/2013 16:23

Nutrogena T Gel shampoo. The one with coal tar in so it's brown colour in a clear bottle - although bottle comes in a box now I think. Follow instructions to leave on scalp a few mins before rinsing. Use for about half a dozen hair washes - like a miracle cure honestly!

tinypumpkin · 28/06/2013 21:24

Thank you. Have bought the head and shoulders for now but will be trying the other suggestions if these don't work! I do appreciate it :)

PS - Did worry about nits, not that I am paranoid or anything!
