Or is it only if longer than that you need to taper them?

On 40mg a day.

Dd has always been given a tapered dose, even if she just had them for 3 or 4 days. Might be different for children though.

Depends on if you have taken them in the last 3-6 months and why you are taking them ( and the dose too) .

Can cause adrenal supression if your body has become used to them.

You need to speak to a pharmacist or whoever prescribed them for individual advice.

Thats quite a high dose....so not sure.

I was on 25mg daily for first trimester of both pregnancies, and had to wean off, but was told 2 weeks or less not to bother.

But I would check with a higher dose.

I've only ever tapered steroids. Check with your prescriber. It also depends on why you've been prescribed them. Once I stopped suddenly and my condition went all over the place.

Years ago, I was prescribed a 6 week course of Cortisone to fight an infection. I began on the highest dose which was 1 and a quarter tablets - but do not know the actual dosage.
I do remember the amazing effect it had on me - 20 years younger and full of energy. Each week I had to reduce by a quarter, < and aged 5 years!> I had no bad side effects infact all my vital signs were healthier than before.

So with my type of Cortisone steroid it was necessary to reduce dosage weekly.

I was prescribed Prednisolone for recurrent miacarriage and the advice was to just stop after 2 weeks on 25mg (when not pregnant) but to taper when on 40mg (went up to this dosage once pregnant and started tapering at 9 weeks, 5mg every 3 days). although I was on 40 for longer so not sure it tapering was because of the high dose or the fact I was l it for several weeks.

If you have only been on that dose for 7 days then it is safe to stop. At that dose is linked ot the length of time you take it for.

Hatescolds · 07/06/2013 21:17

Sorry should also say it does depend on why you are on them as well, for example it is common to use short course like 40 mg for 5-7 days for asthma. If you have been given them for a condition such as polymyalgia then it is more usual to have a slow reduction

DD, asthmatic, tapers but it is not usual from what I can make out. She takes 40mg a day for 5-7 days then tapers by 5mg every second day, if her symptoms worsen during that time she increases by 5mg again.
