Feeling of lump in throat

Has anyone else ever had this? Its been on and off for about 3 months now, seemed to come on after viral laryngitis I had in March. I can feel it when I swallow, though its not painful to swallow food. Its worse at the moment as I think I have a cold coming on.

I have an underactive thyroid but its stable. Had a full blood count, thyroid and iron tests a few weeks ago (for a different reason) and they were ok. Looked in the mirror and the back of my throat looks a bit red, but not infected as it doesn't hurt, just a bit irritated.

Seeing GP later today. Does it sound like anything worrying? I am 38, hardly drink and an ex smoker (gave up 11 years ago at 27).

I've had this. Seen ENT consultant, who 'scoped me (totally painless and not bothersome, v thin tube up nose and down back of throat - but I couldn't feel it, iyswim, and that's from someone who is a bit phobic about anything down throat!) and pronounced me healthy.

He has no idea what it is, possibly a touch more reflux than usual (I get reflux and am on meds for it), possibly allergies and post nasal drip. The more you worry, with this kind of thing, the worse it gets - so getting checked out very good idea Smile

GP prescribed omeprazole (though my reflux is so mild its hardly there), referred for an ultrasound to check the thyroid and got to go back in 6 weeks.

Weird isnt it. He didnt think it was anything serious as no weight loss or other such symptoms, and couldnt see anything in my throat.

Thyroid aching now after he examined it!

Sounds like post nasal drip. A sinus washout might help.

2 months later and I'm still waiting for a thyroid ultrasound. Have also had an occasional metallic taste in mouth, which could be a new steroid nasal spray? and the throat feeling comes and goes. I don't notice it when I'm eating or sleeping, seems to make the feeling go away.

I'm scared its throat cancer as was briefly a smoker in my 20's.

This sounds familiar. The lump in my throat turned out to be a thyroid nodule. It wasn't visible from the outside but I was aware of it from the inside. It was the size of a ping pong ball. I had it removed surgically as it was making me hyperthyroid as well.

I think the chances of it being throat cancer are very small. My mind leapt to that conclusion too. My GP said that throat cancer is often caught early and can be well treated these days.

Hopefully its just reflux or maybe that thing hat used to be called 'globus hystericus' which is the sensation of a lump in the throat caused by anxiety/stress.

I know this is a really old post but did you ever find out what was wrong? I'm suffering with exactly the same

Superfoodie123 · 05/01/2022 16:32

You probably have full blown hashimotos. About 90% of people with hypothyroidism have it. The lump in your throat will be antibodies attacking your thyroid and the surrounding tissues. It can be reduced with diet changes but its not easy. I would get your antibodies tested. Nhs is clueless on this stuff but you can get blood tests on let's get checked

I used to get this but mine was due to anxiety, it was psychosomatic but felt completely real. Just a possibility.

Runforthehillocks · 05/01/2022 16:52

Yes I had it. Had a barium meal x-ray and everything, but it turned out to be anxiety. Went on for a few months, possibly up to a year. This was about 4 years ago. Funnily enough, it's started up again recently.
