I have an infected wisdom tooth which needs extracting in hospital under GA - saw consultant and was told I will have to wait until after baby born as am already 34 weeks and procedure will be complicated because of angle of tooth.

Tooth is currently infected for the 2nd time in 6 weeks and I'm in excruciating pain.

I have taken:
Paracetamol
Codeine
Metronidazole

Still I agony. Literally in tears.

What else can I do...?!

Ring your MW or out of hours dr for advice. I'm sure there is something else you can take during pregnancy which they don't 'advertise'. Or has anyone suggested oil of cloves? Stinks to high heaven but did help with pain when I had my wisdom teeth out. I feel for you, tooth pain sucks and being 34w pg is bad enough on its own (I am too!)

No number for midwife but have tried OOH GP service but didn't get through triage ;( they said nothing they can do but suggested I present at A&E if that bad.
It is bad.... But not sure A&E is appropriate.

Also recommend clove oil. Have used it for toothache before and it numbed the pain almost instantaneously.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Can I get it at the regular pharmacy?

I had an abscess and infected wisdom tooth which was impacted. My god, never had pain like it so I sympathise, especially as I only had paracetamol.
I think I was about 25 weeks but had mine out under massive amounts of local anaesthetic. It was a tad brutal but once it was out and the ab's kicked in it was a massive relief.
Could you get a 2nd dentist opinion re GA? I ended up at our local dental access centre as private practice was closed at the weekend.

SizzleSazz · 04/06/2013 23:25

I saw clove oil in (a small) boots today

I saw the consultant at the hospital on referral from my dentist and they said by the time they could get me in - 4 weeks ish I would be 38 weeks and I am due to be induced then as diabetic so that's the problem I think.
He said it could be done under LA if I wanted but same timescale so I said I'd prefer GA and he said prob better as looks tricky.

Mine was done the same day! But I literally couldn't move for the pain Sad. I'm not sure what your painkillers are - are any of them antibiotics to deal with the infection?

weakestlink · 05/06/2013 08:41

Yes metronidazole is an antibiotic...
I did go to A&E in the end last night and saw junior doctor but he couldn't give me anything more...
Got home about 3am and managed to sleep 5-6.30am. Am going to give sleep another shot now!
Might ring the dentist later and see if they can do anything :(
Will get clove oil if I can summon energy to leave the house!

Aargh ,so sorry to hear this .
Tooth pain is the pits .

Apply toothpaste for sensitive teeth direct to area ?

Gargle with salt water - google for directions

Could you use one of those pain patches they sell for backache ? Thinking dont go via blood steam so ok if pregnant ? ( no medical knowledge here )

Ring dentist ,cry . They must have suggestions .

Got emergency dentist appointment this afternoon....

Apparently it might be an option to remove the middle of the tooth or something like that which will stop the pain until they can take the whole tooth out.

OP posts:
gingeroots · 05/06/2013 14:49

Ok that makes sense I think ,guess they'll clean and dress infected bit .

Will be fine with local .

Are they going to do it ?

SizzleSazz · 05/06/2013 19:28

Hope the appointment went well Smile

As there was no space around my tooth they drilled out the middle bit and then clamped it from inside and hoiked it out! Not pretty but worked so I didn't care Grin

weakestlink · 05/06/2013 20:53

Evening all!

Well despite what the consultant said my dentist said she could not do the remove the middle of the tooth thing due to the awkward angle Hmm

She did clean the tooth out though and put a temporary filling to seal it....

I am still taking the antibiotics though and feeling much better although still painful not agony.
