Can I demand to know my blood test results?

Had a whole variety of blood tests on Friday. Thyroid, liver, kidneys, auto-immune profile, etc.

Doctors left me a message yesterday asking me to call back. Wasn't expecting the results 'til Friday. Did call back, and was told that I need to see a doctor. The nurse who has my results was busy, so the receptionist booked me in for the next 'normal' appointment in a fortnight.

It's worrying me sick. Can I phone up and ask again? Would that seem really rude? I suffer from anxiety anyway, so this is really hard...

Demand might be too strong a word...

I just want to know if this is something big, or if it's a vitamin deficiency or something that won't make much of a difference.

There's no way I can get to the doctors, I'm too ill in bed, so they'd need to tell me over the phone.

I'd tell them how stressful this is for you & ask if the dr can call you back. Hope it's nothing serious.

Ring and ask to speak to a Dr.

crashdoll · 30/05/2013 10:53

I always pop in and ask for a print out. If the doctor has seen them, then you have every right to a copy.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 30/05/2013 12:59

Looks like I'll be there for an emergency appointment later, so I'll ask for a print-out. Thank you :)

Hope it went ok.

Did it all go ok, Caja?

I have a kidney infection... I cried a lot and have been let home for tonight but am under strict instructions to admit myself if I get worse or don't improve by morning. I have a bed number and everything.

They still wouldn't let me have my test results. Said I need to see a specific doctor.

I've had a kidney infection. It was incredibly painful and lasted 3 days before the pain started to ease, so I hope yours clears up soon.

Can you ask the doctors to ring you if they have a cancellation for the gp you need to see, so that you can be seen more quickly?

CajaDeLaMemoria · 30/05/2013 21:51

That's a good idea, I'll ask them.

I've had kidney infections 9 times over the last 18 months. Always end up in hospital. Had surgery to fix it a month and a half ago though, and thought it'd gone perfectly.

Doctor tested my urine for pregnancy three times before shed believe I wasn't, though. Irritating.

Your test results are our data and under the Data Protection Act, your surgery cannot withhold them from you if you ask for them.

PipkinsPal · 31/05/2013 16:16

Unless you are medically trained a print out of your blood test results won't make sense to you at all.

Madsometimes · 31/05/2013 16:46

I wouldn't worry about not having your test results. I would worry about the receptionist booking you in for an appointment in a fortnight with a kidney infection. You need to raise this with the practice because she clearly needs further training.
