Mucus in nappy - very upset ds

My 11 month old ds has had 7 enormous poos today. One was so explosive it missed the nappy completely (he wears cloth) and shot down both legs instead. They were very soft.

We put him to bed and all was fine for 10 minutes and they big screams, much back arching, won't breastfeed. There was a smell so I investigated in the dark and could see nothing, but I had a sixth sense and got him out to check.

It looked like someone had blown their nose in his nappy, and once we had cleaned it off him he was much happier, although still hard to settle to sleep.

Does anyone know what this is ? - I tried to do a search, but all the mucus and poo threads are about newborns.

Neither my ds or me eat dairy products BTW.

You get mucus with Irritable Bowel (not saying your ds has IBS!) so maybe it is just something that occurs with an upset stomach - maybe clearing everything out so to speak. It could be that he has eaten something that has disagreed with him (my IBS triggers are raw onions and raw garlic so I avoid them like the plague) or it could just be a viral thing. Whichever, it sounds like he was very uncomfortable but has now cleared out his system. If he seems OK now, I wouldn't worry too much, though if he has another bout I would take him to the doctors - they will probably do a stool sample. HTH.

My DS sufferred the very same thing on nuerous occasions, and I took him to the doctors and rang the very useless NHS direct and ended up in hosiptal in France one occasion and they just said it was the clearing of the stomach after something had disagreed with him. Although if you feel that we is getting worse take him to the Drs.

It also happened when my DS had a really heavy cold.

People elsewhere have mentioned using the BRAT diet (think it stands for Banana, Rice, Apples and Toast) which should help his stomach settle as they are "mild", although there are no clincial trilas that back this up.

The key thing is to make sure he gets plenty of water to rehydrate, and if he doesn't fancy much food for the next few days don't worry as it is probably just his body settling and clearing itself. (at the hospital they suggested reducing the level of his diary intake as this could be prolonging the stomach bug, i.e give him diluted milk formula or just water)

Goodluck and hope he feels better very soon
