Can you treat a abcess (mouth abcess) without antibiotics?

I think i have the worst teeth ever, i'm always getting abcesses, have had quite a few teeth out and i am petrified of the dentist. Its now friday afternoon and i cant get an appointment before the school run and i cant take the dd's with me. I have a abcess, it doesnt hurt, its where one of my teeth came out (a couple years ago) and i have not had all the root removed, its been fine up until now but the dentist will moan at me for not getting it seen too.

Anyway, i dont realy want to go to out of hours dentist over the weekend unless i really have to, is there anything else i can do to bring the swelling down over than to keep swishing warm salty water around my mouth?

An ulcer mouth wash from boots etc.. alosair or something. Combined with using corsodyl daily from now on

Corsodyl. Corsodyl. Corsodyl. Although warm salty water is good too. You only ever need antibiotics if you become "systemically" unwell - swollen glands, temperature, really severe swelling.

Do you know, it's considerably easier to have roots removed than it is to have a whole tooth taken out? It always seems like it would be trickier, but it's completely the opposite.

Thank you, i'm pleased i dont have to rush of to the dentist, my face is not swollen and i havn't got a temp so will try Corsodyl.

And i will try and pluck up the courage to get the roots pulled out.

Ellie, how do they take a root out w/o removing the tooth?

I also have an abscess on the side of a tooth and too scared to go..

Definitely use warm water and salt to swish around your mouth 2 or 3 times a day. It has worked for DH a number of times.

As I understand it,they make a hole in the middle of the tooth, pull out the root and fill it in again.

I've just had 2 root canals done, just make sure your dentist is generous with the anaesethic!

It's better than just pulling the tooth, if the tooth isn't rotten.

Good luck, you really need to find a dentist you are comfortable with and who understands your fears.
