Side effects of mmr and single measles vaccines in older children

Hi. I haven't given my 4 and 6 yr old mmr as my older son had quite a bad reaction. Thinking about it agin now with all the media coverage and wondering if side effects would be more or less now they are older. May go for single ones so interested in their side effects too. Thanks

Interested in responses as DS had a bad reaction to his MMR and is due boosters soon, hoping I can ask for them single but I hear that NHS don't offer that and I'd have to go private?

there is no mumps single, so I would tend to go for the MMR.

You can't get the mumps vac now unfortunately, so the MMR is the only option. Dd had hers at 3.5 and ds had his at 2. There wasn't any side effects from what I remember. Not even a high temp.

I was vaxed as a child but was teaching in 1994 when they did a load of catch ups and I also had mmr then (I'd had mumps - worst ever childhood illness - and rubella (no bother I didn't even feel ill) as a child) as I'd never had measles and my uncle has a vision problem from measles and a close friend has a heart problem from measles)

I felt a wee bit "fluey" for a couple of days. Otherwise it was fine.

All my dc had mmr (though I made my doctor dh take them, I'm a coward around needles!!).

You need to speak to your GP and discuss the type of reaction your older son had. It may be that your younger children may not react in the same way at all. Even if they have a reaction, it might still be preferable (and you'll be prepared for it) than the risk of getting measles etc.

Not sure if there is any evidence that single jabs would reduce side effects as they are the same stuff, just spaced out.

Again, why does the unavailable of the mumps vaccine come into a discussion about protecting against measles? The single measles vaccine is only available privately in the UK - there are usually two options Rouvax (sanofi Pasteur) and M-vax (egg free version made my SII). If you find a clinic close to you they should be able to answer your questions about reactions etc. Rouvax is still used in France.
