Dental Advice re bloody mucus following extraction - really grateful for any advice .

Sorry if TMI in subject line .

Have had long standing problem with a crowned tooth ( upper molar ) where root died ,root canal filling through crown hasn't resolved feeling of infection above tooth ,under eye socket .

Said tooth and neighbour extracted 48 hours ago .
Feeling of infection still there and now I suddenly have a fair amount of thick mucus to clear from nose ,and it contains a lot of dark brown blood .

Dentist made no mention of antibiotics .

Is this a sign of infection ? Is it fairly normal ?
Am I ok to blow my nose ?

Don't blow your nose. Use a decongestant spray like otravine, painkillers if you need them and go back to the dentist as an emergency in the morning. The roots of the teeth might have been in your sinus (normal) and a communication created between your mouth and sinus (common, hard to prevent). Your dentist can check for this. Often the only treatment required is antibiotics and it heals by itself. Occasionally a small surgical procedure is required.

Don't blow your nose!
Hope as well you at least phoned for advice, if not, do so in the morning..

I am blowing my nose but will try and stop,

Went back to dentist ,he checked wound and cleaned it up a bit .
Seemed happy enough ,said evidence of some candida ? which he cleaned off .

No response to my queries about the mucus and blood except to ask me if I got blood from nose into mouth when I blew nose . I don't .

The teeth ( upper molars ) were very close to sinuses ,dentist thought sinus infection for many months . Extraction seemed to involve a lot of brute force ,not painful though .

Am sleeping very propped up with half the settee in my bed and this has drastically improved pain in chest which I assume was gastric reflux . So will carry on .

Should I be worried about the blood ?

FGS. I'm not very sure of your dentist! White stuff (which is what he called candida) can be totally normal on a recent socket. You don't suddenly get candida over night on a new extraction site in a healthy adult. And if you had candida severe enough to leave a white coating it needs treatment!

Oh. Are you getting drinks coming out of your nose when you drink? Or smoke if you are a smoker? If you hold your nose and blow like you are clearing your ears on a plane, can you feel pressure or does it escape into your mouth?

If the answer to these is all no that's good news. If not go to dentist or a&e.

If there's still bleeding don't spit it out, swallow. It will help preserve the healing clot.

If you have pain that's getting worse not better or a foul rotting taste or smell, back to dentist or a&e.

But ummm I still don't understand about the mucus heavily loaded with blood that comes out of my nose .
Bur assume you'd have said if this was a sign of something in need of attention .

I'm due to start chemo this coming Tuesday ,which is why I had the teeth out really as I was worried about on going infection .
They'll do blood tests before they start to check I'm ok and I don't suppose this will put it back too much .

But I hope it doesn't and it's why I'm concerned to get it sorted .

I suppose it's possible that the lining of the sinus was damaged but not enough to cause a communication (hole in it). it's definitely better to get them sorted before any treatment so well done and if you're stressed, worried or feeling .

I second bonzo, your dentist sounds a bit ref candida...

I feel a bit about having both molars out - nothing on that side there at all now to chew on .

Was prepared for one but dentist felt xray showed that the one next to it had died . Said it was up to me ....and I agreed to have it out because I've had soo much trouble in that area and dentist said if left in it was a risk it could flare up .

But was all very rushed . Dentist had double booked himself in order to do it quickly for me .

Oh well ,all a bit new and difficult to avoid feeling at moment . I'm sure it'll subside .
