Breast pain one side - doctor not interested

Posted on behalf of my friend X.

Just over a month ago, X woke up with one breast swollen, hot and very very painful. GP suspected an infection, gave her antibiotics. After a few days with no improvement, she went back and GP gave her different tablets. Ten days later it was less swollen, no longer hot, but still v v painful, he referred her to the Breast Clinic. Her appointment was a few days ago.

Doctor at the Breast Clinic said some women 'just get unexplained breast pain', X's mammogram was clear, he gave her a leaflet on breast pain and basically said go away and deal with it. The leaflet says there may be feelings of anger and frustration and to try acupuncture or aromatherapy to deal with it.

Surely this is wrong? If the pain was on both sides and had started gradually, I'd understand the doctor's attitude - but this was sudden onset and one side only. X is still in pain from that side, but the breast is no longer swollen, just incredibly painful.

Should X be pushing for further investigations? Or is this 'normal' for one-sided breast pain?

I'm not sure tbh as she did get a referral and clear mammogram. Can she feel a lump or is there just pain?

Have a look at this thread. I assume she had a mammogram of ultrasound at the hospital? If not she ought to, just to be sure it's nothing bad, but pain is often unilateral.

She had a mammogram. The thing is, this isn't cyclical - it's constant. And the sudden onset - quite literally overnight - followed by the huge swelling seems to point to some underlying cause.

Not quite sure where to go from here.

Mine was the same. Just started one day, initially thought maybe I was going to come on early, but period came and went. It went on for a month before I went to the dr, as I had also noticed a lump.
Finally just eased off, still not sure if that's because I swapped to no wired sports bras or not, but daren't go back to wired.
Mine was also swollen, but don't remember thinking it was particularly hot. Maybe the infection has cleared, but tissue needs time to become less inflamed (just guessing there, could be wrong).
Hope she improves soon.

Thanks Monty I will pass this on to her.
