My 17 wk old dd has been colicky pretty much from Day 1 but over the last few weeks has been exhibiting some other symptoms which may or may not be related to the immature state of her poor litle tummy - any advice would be much appreciated. I'm not really concerned about her health as such as she's gaining weight brilliantly and developing fine but would hate to think that either she (or I!) are suffering unnecessarily. I have a niggling feeling that it may be reflux but having read up on this subject can't find anything to confirm this for sure - just wondered if anyone else had a baby with similar symptoms. My primary concern is the infrequency of her bowel movements - usually just once in 24 hours. I wouldn't say she's constipated as when she does go it's nice and soft but generally it's a mixture of 'normal' yellow baby poo with some clay like green stuff which I'm sure isn't normal. Occasionally (like this morning) she does a totally abnormal one - grey/blue in colour and really smelly (sorry to those with weak stomachs!) She's also become more sicky over the last few weeks, especially after her 10.30/11am feed bringing up two or three lots of mucousy sick, the texture of raw egg whites. She seems to build up to these, getting increasingly uncomfortable then experiencing some temporary relief after she's been sick - and then it starts again. She's still sleeping fine (as per GF's routines) and generally takes roughly the correct amount of milk for her weight (just over 14lb) however, I am finding it a struggle to feed her - she's not generally arching her back or anything as I understand reflux babies tend to do (although this has happened a couple of times) but fusses and frets especially after I've broken her feed to try to wind her (still not always successfully!). Being fairly persistent, I can generally get her to finish most feeds - am worried that this is causing some of the problems however, if I didn't persist, she'd probably only happily take around 26oz, almost 10oz less than she should have. She rarely gives me any sign that she's ready to break the feed to burp so I tend to do this after around 5 or 6oz - I'm fairly sure that if I didn't break the feed, she'd down the lot in one go but I haven't put this to the test as I'm worried about the consequences - do you think I should let her take as much as she will in one go and see what happens? She doesn't seem to be any happier for being kept upright after a feed, in fact, she tends to be happier when laid flat. I'm giving her SMA Gold which my ds had no problems with (although he was bf until five months) - I've heard some bad things about this but she seemed fine on it until a few weeks ago. I also thought that reflux became apparent fairly early on and whilst she's had tummy troubles since the beginning, she hadn't been particularly sicky. Other minor symptoms which I'm sure all relate to the same general problem are small amounts of very watery sick (colourless, occasionally with a few specks of milk) whilst she's asleep or on waking, a very red face after being fed, some rhythmic grunting noises and high pitched screeching - much as I love her, neither of us is getting much from each other at the moment to the extent that I'm toying with the idea of going back to work earlier than planned which would be such a shame. Sorry it's such a long post but it really helps to write it down - I'm planning to discuss with my HV at clinic this pm and have it all clear in my mind now. No doubt she'll put it down to the joys of babyhood - maybe she's right but would really appreciate your thoughts.
