tonsillitis- having difficulty swallowing water or any food

I was diagnosed today as having tonsillitis quite badly, give antibiotics and sent on my way. I am in agony. struggling to swallow any kind of tablets, water, soup or even my own saliva. What is the best course of action? I am wondering whether a Complan type meal replacement would be any good? I have a throat spray that doesn't do much to relieve the pain and I am desperate! Any advice would be appreciated.

Tonsillitis is miserable isn't it. When I used to suffer badly I lived on the type of yoghurt that comes in tubes and ice chips. And, bizarrely, rice in curry sauce seemed to go down well. Ice lollies. I think thinks you don't actually need to swallow ar eyour best bet for a few days. It's worse if you get dehydrated. If you get this often, pester and pester again to get the little blighters taken out. I had to wait for my bouts to get really bad before they allowed me a tonsillectomy and it changed my life. I was getting struck down almost every other month.

Are you taking the maximum pain killers you can? 3 lots of ibuprofen a day and 4 lots of co-codamol?

Only has this twice as an adult and was like you, couldn't even swallow paracetamol. Doc recommended taking dissolvable co-codamol ( you can also gargle with it) it helped more and was easier to take in tiny sips. I feel for you. Sleeping as much as possible helpedr forget pain for a bit. Hopefully anti's will kick in ASAP.

Oh thanks for your quick responses everyone! I did manage to take one Nurofen Plus (Ibuprofen) with codeine. But then choked on the other one. Will get some tube yogurts and lollies, and the co-codamol to gargle with sounds good too. Until a year or so ago I'd never had tonsillitis, then in my 30's I can't seem to shake flu, coughs and sore throats.. think i need some strong vitamins to sort me out after this clears up!

I fully sympathise, I suffer with tonsillitis and have had that razor feeling in my throat.. You could try grinding the pain killers to powder form with a couple of teaspoons also try to gargle some warm salt water if you can..
Hope that you feel better soon :)

It's shit isn't it.

Ice lollies and ice cream should calm the swelling a little. Try dispersible asprin too.

And sleep as much as you can. Evil tonsils.

Hope you're better soon.
