hi, seems a silly question, but im curious as to how much other kids drink.

my ds 18months hasnt had milk since 5months old due to milk allergy and has always drank loads of water. i posted before about him drinking 5pints of water a day. since then the paeditrician has booked up hospital next week for 'water deprivation' testing for diabetes insipidus. im dreading it and still wondering if its habit. a week ago i threw the bottles away and changed to a beaker, thinking if it was habit he'd scream for a week from missing the bottle and thatd be the end of it.

hes now down to about 3pints in a 24hour period. i measure what he drinks from the morning till the next morning as he drinks 3/4 times in the night. ive found him worse at night since the bottles went. its roughly 20oz to a pint if that helps.thankyou for anyone that can be bothered to add their kids intake upGrin

Hi
I was worried about this too with ds and started a thread a couple of months ago I think it's under health my ds was drinking about 9 beakers a day( approx) 250mls plus waking and having 2-3 cups in the night and having soaking nappies. seems to have settled down quite a lot now though. Good taht yuor doctor is looking into it though as this will reassure you or help you one way or the other.

ok, let's see, maybe 3 sips of milk at breakfast, but then his breakfast has a lot of milk in it so I do count that too.

A beaker full at dinner time. Another half a beaker full during the afternoon. None at teatime, then half a beaker full at bedtime or else he wakes at around this time squarking for a drink.

He doesn't drink that much though. 3 pints in 24 hours doesn't sound too bad, but perhaps he is using it as a substitute for food? Does he eat much?

7up · 30/04/2006 22:35

hi rhubarb, yea we thought about the being hungry, a lot of people said that on the other thread. he has got a fatless diet but i do give him big dinners 3x a day and snacks inbetween . he has reduced by 2 pints a day since the beaker so wanted to know how much others drank to let the paed know before next week, incase he says leave the hospital visit (i hope)and see if he reduces even more. hes been like this since 5months old when he stopped the milk so does make sense that hes hungry

Hi 7up, do you think it could be related to the fact he is having 3 packets of crisps a day? Does he have other salty foods as well?

My toddler doesn't drink anywhere near that much, I don't think, but I wouldn't really know how to tell (still breastfed!)

7up · 30/04/2006 22:42

hi franny, hes only been having the crisps 3times a day since i saw the dietician last month. no salt fullstop in any other foods, its homecooked. from 5months he was on a couple of pints a day but couldnt eat crisps thenWink.

il def be looking for the ones you mentioned to me earlierSmile

Sorry here I am banging on about the bloody crisps again! You will think I am obsessed. Just thought it could be linked. Hope you can get it sorted.

7up · 30/04/2006 22:45

My nephew was drinking huge amounts of juice. The dr referred him for blood test which came back with a high glucose reading. He was then referred to a paeditrician who examined him and said he was fine. His excessive juice intake was down to habit.
Its good to get him tested at this stage, hopefully they can rule out diabetes.

thanks kidSmile

I've got the opposite problem. My DS (12 months) and I'm lucky to get him to drink 2-3 ounces of water a day. He has about 3 smallish breast feeds in the day and his best breast feed at night - but thats it. His lips quite often look a bit creased but he refuses to drink more even though he is offered drinks throughout the day.

mumball · 01/05/2006 02:02

My DS knocked milk on its head as soon as He could, it was a hard struggle getting him to drink anything! Now he just drinks Orange Juice (pure) pineapple juice and Apple Juice, he drinks about a litre a day. On a constipation website it suggests about 6 - 8 drinks a day. DS is 4 now and still going strong! He doesn't eat alot either!

mumball · 01/05/2006 02:04

Doesn't eat crisps either!

7up · 01/05/2006 08:16

thanks for late replies last night, or should i say early hours of the morning!

dd drinks 1/2 pint of milk and a big cup of water.
Morning pal x how's the barnet?

KristinaM · 01/05/2006 08:23

DS 23 months drinks about 24 oz of milk ( in bottles) plus water from cups - maybe about 2 full cups a day. We are trying to reduce his milk intake so he eats more.

Sorry but 3 pints a day seems a lot to me. But I guess your son is on a special diet if he is fat free, so cant compare to other kids

7up · 01/05/2006 08:25

morning allie, thanks for that.

barnet ok, think mum could have left bleach on a bit longer, little bit yellowy. she was worried and said "your (the hairdresser)sister said dont leave it on for longer than half hour", bless her she didnt want my hair to fall out!

went to town for new knickers yesterday and got a few admiring glancesShockso cant look too bad

hows you, crap weather aint it. im ringing the paed midweek hence this thread

bless ya! Is he sleeping better at all? Weather is minging. I'm at work boooooooo

7up · 01/05/2006 08:31

at least the suns not out if you at work

waking has been worse with him in the last week since i threw the bottles and swapped to beakers, dont know if its coz they dont hold as much and its not quenching his thirst or hes just being a sod!

at least if he does have the test and its negative i can get tough and refuse the water at night to get him too sleep through.
