hi, seems a silly question, but im curious as to how much other kids drink.

my ds 18months hasnt had milk since 5months old due to milk allergy and has always drank loads of water. i posted before about him drinking 5pints of water a day. since then the paeditrician has booked up hospital next week for 'water deprivation' testing for diabetes insipidus. im dreading it and still wondering if its habit. a week ago i threw the bottles away and changed to a beaker, thinking if it was habit he'd scream for a week from missing the bottle and thatd be the end of it.

hes now down to about 3pints in a 24hour period. i measure what he drinks from the morning till the next morning as he drinks 3/4 times in the night. ive found him worse at night since the bottles went. its roughly 20oz to a pint if that helps.thankyou for anyone that can be bothered to add their kids intake upGrin

Ds is 3 and since he stopped bfing at 2.5 he has had maybe 500ml (so that's under a pint).

7up · 01/05/2006 08:46

being admitted 4pm on monday 8th, depending on results (hopefully negative) could be in on the tuesday night aswell. i bloody hate the kids ward, its so depressing. last time a little lad died of cancer and all his family were crying outside our roomSad

hopefully there might be more mums about as its raining and if i think his now 3pints isnt too bad, i can ring paed and suggest we leave it and see what he says. the test isnt very pleasant and il be on my own with him, so will be awful

can your mum not come? it may be worth it just to put your mind at rest and know that what you plan to do will be the best for him. If you leave it and just refuse to give him the drink, and he's thirsty because he is poorly you'll feel awful.

AllieBongo · 01/05/2006 08:50

i do.. in big nappies and sanitary towels!

7up · 01/05/2006 08:57

mum will have luke allie. oh i wouldnt refuse him the water without docs say so, wot i meant was that if he thought reducing it by 2pints might prove it habit then liam wouldnt have to go through test yet. i queried that he was too young anyway but he said not. i think ive just had a crap few weeks with solicitors and all and i know i need to take him to know for def if its habit or not and ive got to not think of myself i spose and the fact it bloody hate the kids ward!

you working all day then, or going home to your gorgeous kids

well, you binned me off... mmmmmm Maccy d's the forbidden food!

threebob · 01/05/2006 09:38

Do it - at 18 months he will soon forgive and forget - not so the later you leave it. 3 pints is still heaps, and quickly ruling out diabetes (or ruling it in and treating it) is better than months of trying to wean him off the water and still maybe having to have the tests.

It's better to know. Always.

AllieBongo · 01/05/2006 09:40

wise words there!!! it's amazing, you get 300 posts on a dress or some make up, and no one really looks at these!

7up · 01/05/2006 10:01

cheers 3bob. allie, youre right, they answer to all the tedious thread and not the ones where youre requesting info. never mind, praps no one likes me!

hiya 7up, dd drinks 10oz of milk a day, (at night) in a bottle, and then during the day she will have 3-4 beakers (the avent ones) of juice, and when she goes to bed, i fill up 1 of the beakers with water, and its always empty by morning, during the day she might also drink a smoothie too, she does seem to drink quite a lot, and always has soaking nappies.
i think you should take ds to the hospital, i know they can be depressing places, but at least he will only be in there a short while, maybe if you take in all his favourite toys for distraction it might help take his mind off not having a drink? some childrens ward also have play specialists that come around and entertain the kids, giving you a break, i really hope it all goes well, and is proved to be a habit Smile

7up · 01/05/2006 10:29

thanks lanismum, your dd drinks a lot then. i think coz liams is water they thought might not be habit coz it doesnt taste yummyGrin

OP posts:
lanismum · 01/05/2006 10:33

prob a stupid idea, but could you try and swap to the teeny beakers? have just dug out my dds 1st beaker (ahhhhh) and it only holds 140 mls, if it were a habit, so you think it would be enough that he just had a beaker of water? maybe that would help cut his intake down?

7up · 01/05/2006 10:42

thats how hes cut down by 2pints a week lanismum, the beakers hold 6oz rather than 9oz bottles, so hes still drinking it nearly hourly but just not as much. at night he'l cry till i refill it, little terror.

OP posts:
lanismum · 01/05/2006 10:45

awwww, it does sound like he really is thirsty Sad at least if they do the tests you will know one way or another.

lanismum · 01/05/2006 10:48

oh well, at least my useless ramblings have kept your thread bumped Grin

7up · 01/05/2006 10:50

I think you are waiting for someone else to tell you that their kid drinks 3 pints a day and doesn't have diabetes - and if you wait long enough someone probably will.

However that doesn't mean your child doesn't and you should go for the test. Why not start a thread for support for you as you wait for the tests?
