Ds has sticky white gunk from eyes

Ds has started to get white gunk from both of his eyes today. Is rubbing them lots and i know that we should not share towels in case of cojunctivitus but what else.

Can stuff be brought from the chemists or will he have to see a doctor. And what about nursery?

My dd1 had conjuctivitis and I had to get stuff from the GP. Used ointment during the day and cream at night (the cream made the eyes blurry - she didn't like it)

The nursery was fine as I had medication (and dd1 probably caught it there anyway!)

I have since found out that breastmilk is supposed to fab at getting rid of conjunctivitis. I wasn't bf dd1 at the time, I now have dd2 who has started getting gloopy eyes - so I'll give it a go.

how old is he? You can buy drops over the counter but if you say they are for a young child they will refer you to your doc.

He is 3 first time he has had anything like this and he started nursery this week.

There are two types of conjunctivitis, bacterial and viral. Virl conjuntivitus gives red itchy eyes but usually no (or non infective)discharge. The discharge from bacterial conjunctivitis is usually yellowish. You can only buy drops from the chemist and I doubt they will be any good for a three year old. The oinment is better. You could phone NHS 24 and see if you cold get a quick appt at a walk in or even if they would get a prx made up for you. some nurseries will not let your child go if they have bacterial conjuncitivtis. So you are better off finding out, then phoning to see what the policy is.
Keep her eyes clean with cooled salted boiled water. Or water with a camomile teabag in it. Use separate towels and make sure you wipe from the inside of the eye out and use each cotton ball only once.

Yes it does it is yellow and crusty now and is sticking to his eyelashes and his eyes are very bloodshot and itchy.

DD regularly gets sticky eyes (with green / yellow gunk) as a result of nursery. Needless to say, they ban her as soon as she shows any signs! I found that camomile tea works - I did her eyes each time she needed a new nappy and it was gone in a couple of days.

while waiting to see gp or other you can wipe eyes with cotton wool and saline water (salt water - bolied cooled water with 1 teaspoon of salt dissolved in it).
I cotton wool pad per eye, and wipe from nose outwards ONCE.

Not heard of camomile tea either.Will normnal tea work?

How it is transmitted? Not good for the first week at nursery.

hmm, normal tea lol.
think the cafine can reduce puffyness under the eye but cammomile is more soothing.
Bacterial conjunctivitus i tranfered by contact. direct or in direct via rubbing eyes then touching toys, towels etc.
TBH he is bound to pick these thing up from nurserie, it is a v common childhood comlaint. and v easily transmitted, why hygiene is important in order for it to clear up.

dd has had recurrent conjunctivitis in both eyes. She doesn't respond to standard drops and has back to back courses of different drops plus oral antibiotics.

The last time she showed signs of it I decided not to use drops and used the homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla 6C instead. It never developed into full blown conjunctivitis. Now, as soon as I see any gunk at all I give her Pulsatilla and it seems to have worked.

If you can get to a Boots or Holland and Barrett today it would be worth a try. If it's going to work it tends to do so quite quickly and you may find you don't need to see the GP in the morning.
If you do want to get drops at least you will have been doing something in the mean time!

Hotmama, I used breastmilk in my ds's eye when he was about 4wksold and the goo went the next day. It's also good for nappy rash but he's never had that. Jelly are you bf? Or a sibling? I would def. try that, or again go for the camomile tea, I use that to clean ds's bum sometimes, a tip I got from a friend in Canada and it's lovely.

No not feeding anyone anymore but will hopefully!! Got some drops and boy did he scream the house down then was almost sick on me.

Not sure if he can go to nursery as his eyes are still red, the goo has almost gone but is still there a little bit? any ideas will havebeen doing drop for 24 hours. Havent had guidelines from them.
