This is thread 7 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - the previous thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Hi, I am new here. I am due to have a bladder and bowel prolapse next Thursday and am feeling very scared! I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old so am also worried about how they are going to cope and how much rest I will get! My husband has got 2 and a half weeks off and after that my mum is going to come and stay for 2 weeks but then I think I will be pretty much on my own! Also I am quite young so it all feels a bit unfair really but am hoping that my age will help with the recovery. I look forward to getting to know you all a bit better over the next few weeks!

I have just read that back - bladder and bowel prolapse repair I meant!

Hi mrsc, I had the same repair as kotinka as recovery for me was much the same.

Good luck, and do let us know how you get on x

mrsclairet · 17/05/2013 12:59

Hi, thank you. I started reading this thread from the beginning but soon realised I wouldn't be able to get through it all by the time of my op! But it has been really useful and given me some information I wouldn't have known otherwise.
kotinka - one question I do have is you said you arranged with the gp to have medication when you got back, do I need to do that? Did the doctor give you laxatives aswell or did the hospital give those to you?

My in laws live quite nearby so they will be able to help out a little bit but my sister in law is due to have a baby on the day of my op!! Hopefully it will be a bit late. It's quite exciting as we don't know whether it's going to be a girl or a boy.

Hi all. I had my appt. with Mr. Harmston, and (despite his comment that he, too, didn't think repair was a solution???) he has agreed to do another urodynamics? test, and will have me in for a day to check me physically under a full anaesthetic. I had my blood tests done, while I was there, and my pre-op check up. I found Coventry so efficient, and they were very pleasant! Hopefully he will be able to find out what is pressing on my SI joint when my rectum fills up! He reckons that it is impossible for my bowel to be doing this?? I can't think what else can be, as it only happens when that area is filling up. Any suggestions?

Hugs and best wishes to all of you out there! XX

Hi, oh dear kotinka, hope you will be ok when your DH goes back to work.

My sister in law had the baby on friday, she's still in hospital but I should be able to go and see her later on today, I'm very excited I will get a cuddle.

I have got to go in to the pre-admission clinic tomorrow, I must remember to take a list of questions with me! I am so nervous! I think I will be keeping myself very very busy this week.

Hello, Am new to posting on MN but have been lurking! Have been reading this thread as am 17 days post pelvic floor repair and hysterectomy. After reading the messages I am concerned that I am doing too much. Apart from a rest in the afternoon I have been back to normal housework, except carrying shopping, for a few days. I am still bleeding and sometimes feel uncomfortable and heavy in lower abdomen. Am seeing GP on Tuesday.

Thanks for the reply kotinka.
I am very tired and slightly uncomfortable today as had visitors for a meal yesterday. I have decided to take it really easy for the next few days.

cocolepew · 19/05/2013 18:47

Hello ladies, can I barge in? I posted about a year s1go, then got a hysterectomy.

I have had some bleeding and a full feeling in my vagina. Very crampy and a sore back on the right hand side. I have been having to push on my perineum to evacuate my bowels (not every time). I was wondering if it is a bowel prolapse of some type.

My question is can this cause bleeding?

cocolepew · 19/05/2013 18:49

Charlie you are doing far too much. Leave the housework for a few more weeks.

Thanks I'm phoning tomorrow for an appointment Smile.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/05/2013 20:09

Charlie and Kotinka - you both need to take it easy if you possibly can, the more time you can give your repairs before putting them under any strain the better they will heal. K - not sure about the discharge, sorry, perhaps go to your GP and get it checked?

Coco - it could be a rectocele, I had one repaired 6 months ago, didn't have bleeding or cramps but did have dragging, heaviness and needed a push with a finger (in the vagina) for me to evacuate.

MrsC - hope it goes well tomorrow, write down all your questions beforehand so you don't forget them.

Hi, I've got my pre-op appointment later and I am scared that they are going to say I can't have the operation because I don't feel very well. I have got an upset stomach and feel really washed out but the trouble is I think the upset stomach is due to the stress and worry of the operation (I am a real worrier!) and so if they cancel it, it will probably happen next time aswell. Also I am a bit worried because my son is not very well, he started antibiotics for a urine infection on friday but he seems to be getting worse, not better and it just seems like not a very good time to have the op but then my DH has got time off work and I'm hoping it does go ahead.

Sorry that was a bit of a ramble, I think I am just stressing because it feels like after my pre-op there will be no going back, it is making it all feel very real!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/05/2013 11:16

Hi MrsC - sorry you have got so many worries. Do please go along to the pre-op and tell them about the upset stomach etc, they will be able to advise you. It isn't a case of no going back once you've had the pre-op, if you are ill on the day of the op they would make a decision then. However if you cancel for non-medical reasons (assuming you are NHS) you could be looking at a long wait to get another slot. I hope your DS starts improving soon, I can understand why you are worried.

Hi, just thought I would let you know I feel a lot happier after going to my pre-op. I still feel really nervous but I am a lot more confident that they know what they're doing and have got my best interests at heart. The nurse said that my consultant is fantastic and was generally quite positive about things.I was nervous about having the catheter but she said you won't really feel it and won't feel the need to wee which I hope is true as I usually feel like I need a wee all the time! Just two more days to wait now!!
