An infected finger? VERY trivial!

Okay I know this is very trivial and really not the end of the world, but I'm not sure If I need to see a nurse at my local GP.

Last night my finger started hurting, I just thought I'd cut it so didn't even look at it, but as the evening wore on it got more & more painful. A little purple blister came up on the joint above my knuckle. It started to swell up so I just went to bed hoping it would have gone by the morning. The blister is now double the size & is predominantly white, with some purple. I can't really straighten out my finger, and it really hurts!
Does it sound like an infection? I don't remember cutting my finger at all Blush
Is there anything I can do for it?

TBH if you have no idea why its like that, I would get it looked at. Obviously it isn't normal!

I had one of these on my thumb once. The doctor lanced it and then dressed it.

You should take it to a pharmacist first - they'll tell you if this is something you can deal with yourself (possibly using magnesium sulphate) or should be seen by a nurse or GP.

Agree needs treating sooner rather than later.

Okay thanks everyone, I'll pop to the pharmacy later Smile

Alternatively, as it's already up in a blister, pop it with a sterilised needle, clean it out well, put a plaster on it and see what happens. Chances are it will heal fine and you will have resolved it without exposing yourself to anyone else's germs.

Don't pop it. Seek medical attention. What you've got there is some sort of fairly rapidly progressing problem. It needs attention not diy. In the past I've come across a patient who ended up in ICU having started with a finger infection. You do not want to muck round with infected anything.

It popped itself while I was driving & has got loads better. I'll keep a close eye on it & if it does get worse I'll got to my GP Smile
I don't realise it could get that bad Northern!

I had one of these on my thumb before Christmas and ended up with abs, I'm now losing the nail, which doesn't hurt but looks gory...
