C'minder DS has chicken pox, will ds get them?due to fly on Fri!

My childminders DS has had chicken pox since Friday but she didn't bother to tell me. It was only when DP dropped my DS off this morning that she told him. I am 14 wks pregnant with not 2 (have had chickenpox so midwife said not to worry)and i am due to fly to Ireland with him on Friday. I am really annoyed that she didn't let us know so that we could have made alternative arrangements for childcare for his week.
I know he has probably been exposed - he was with he until thursday - but i would have like to have had the chioce.

Do you think he will definitely get them? I am just wondering if i should cancel my flights or just wait and see. i would hate him to get poorly when we are away plus don't want to infect everyone else ont he flight!

Help...don't know what to do!

he probably will get them. I'm a cm and my mindee had it - dd got it around 2 weeks later.
How long are you going for?

Hi! You may know this, but just in case (I had chickenpox aged 27, and both of my kids have had it too)

Chickenpox can be really mild and not affect them much at all, or can make them feel pretty poorly, or be somewhere inbetween.

It may be that your ds will get it, but that it won't affect him much at all. The spots start about 10 days after exposure and will arrive in three waves, usually affecting different areas of the body - ie back, legs, face etc.

If he does get it and is upset, I found that antihistamine helped with the itching and to help me and ds2 sleep. You may need to check with a pharmacist before giving antihistamines. Warm baths helped too, and if he is unlucky enough to get spots inside his mouth (they can go into all sorts of corners of the body) then fruit jelly helped enormously - ie ordinary jelly with some grapes in. Lovely and cooling/soothing to eat.

Do hope that your little one escapes with the mild version.

"Didn't bother to tell me" !!!!! Shock

WTF???

alison222 · 24/04/2006 12:05

incubatjion is about 10 days to 2 weeks. DD got it 14 days after DS first spots.
They are most contageous just before the spots come out.
If he does get it, when are you flying back, as you are not allowed to fly with CP (if they spot it) they are still contageous until all the spots have scabbed over - about 10 days -2 weeks from the first spots
nurse at GP's suggested tepid baths with bicarbinate of soda to soothe the shin, and if itching v bad antihistamine. Also Caplol to keep temperature down if they have one.

Happy mum of 2 i'm going friday until monday so hopefully he won't get it until then.
I don't mind him getting it - they the younger they are the better - he's 23 mths. It's just bloody ryanair are so inflexible with refunds that i will end up loosing 150 quid! Not a fortune i know but i'd hate to loose it!

Finny and zooey - was that comment aimed at me?????? i think i have a right to know so that i am making an informed decision about whether to send my child!! Maybe i have misinterpreted your comment!! Apologies if i have!

I'm sure that Finny and Zoey's remark is made about the childminder, not you! Likewise. I just can't believe how some people don't think to mention it when their kids are ill, to give us the choice of whether we want our kids to catch it or not. Soooo inconsiderate.

Hope that you don't get caught at work, and that you have a great trip. It sounds as if you should get back before any spots develop.

anniebear · 24/04/2006 14:03

I think Finny and zooey comment was aimed at the childminder also, just the way it was worderd I think. I re read it a few times!!!

My older sister had chicken pox when I was around 18 months , I climbed over her, played with her as usual and I didn't get it

so who knows!!!

saying that, I did get it when I was 21...HORRIBLE!!

sandybee1 · 24/04/2006 14:20

Ohh i'm a bit all over the place today - i think i'm bit over sensitive at the moment!! must be all the hormones!!!

I'm totally stressed out as i am away with work for the next 2 days at a conference, the guilt of being away is bad enough so can't stand the thought of my little bear being poorly while i'm away! I know he'll be fine with his daddy but i guess we always think that mummy is best!

Thanks so much for the support i feel a bit calmer and i'm just going to hope for the best and keep everything crossed!!!

Sandy, I'm sorry - I did mean the childminder, not you. I am sorry it was worded badly - I just couldn't believe that she didn't tell you! Hope it all works out ok :(

We've just had a really weird experience with chickenpox. My sister had it, then about 10 days later my dd2(2.10) came out with this rash, which didn't blister or itch, and didn't look like cp at all. Next door's dd came to play the day before she came out with the spots.. and 14 days later she's got cp! But apart from dd2 getting this strange rash, neither her nor dd1 were ill!

Sorry, sandybee1, I know that's of no help to you whatsoever, hope you're lucky and it comes out after Monday.....
