Still having painful period at fecking 43!

What the bloody hell can I do? 43 and my periods are getting worse and worse from a discomfort point of view! I am in flipping agony Nd worst of all I work with all men so no discussion never mind sympathy there!
What are my options ? I have one Ds and don't plan to have anymore is there absolution out there ?

Go to the GP and talk to them about it.

I'm almost 45 and mine are getting more painful too. The same happened with my mum when she was perimenopausal. It isn't medic worthy yet for me, but if it is for you I'd get checked out.

Get yourself a Mirena coil. I'd advertise for them if they paid me. My GP says nearly all the child-bearing age staff in my surgery have them.

I had the same problem as you, but it's been gone ever since I got my lovely Mirena. I even like the name - sounds like the Mermaid off Stingray.

Go look it up on Wikipedia - or anywhere else - it's great.

It's an IUD but it also releases hormones which commonly either give you very light periods or none at all. GPs often use it for older women who might otherwise need surgery for fibroids. Less cramping, no clots.

It was a total pig to get in though. Had to have 3 painkilling injections in my cervix and there was claret everywhere. I know you're not supposed to be able feel much with your cervix but I definitely can. I can tell the doctor exactly where she's touching me, so it ain't psychological. But even the big hassle (which isn't normal) was worth it. I haven't had a period since my kids were tiny.

I tried the mirena coil before and I was more psycho than normal. That has settled down since I got it removed about 4 years ago.

Jen, I think you are the poster who gave me my Christmas NN - a very belated thank you! And I'm very sorry to hear about your periods. FWIW I had a coil (though not a Mirena) and it gave me the worst periods I have ever had in my life - worse than they are now. But to each their own.

I don't think I have a right to complain, actually - I usually have 2-3 days of grumbles in the runup - the worst of that is the splitting headache which nothing will touch. This is the only time I ever get headaches, it's definitely hormonal.

Then when it all kicks off, I will usually have one really, really, really bad day where I need to change my sanitary arrangements every 2 hours or make a mess. This comes with cramps that no painkillers will touch either.

However, once that day is over, I'm usually OK. Very rarely I'll have one where the pain lasts 2 days.

Yours sound much, much worse than that. Are yours getting heavier too? Mine so are, I made a mess of the bed last night despite triple protection and a midnight change .

Love my mirena. Just had my second one fitted. Practically no periods for the last 5 years :)

Pointythings they are heavier- the day before and the first day are hellish. And I am so hormonal as a result. I really feel quite psycho and have to keep myself in check at work. Doesn't help working with all men who are flipping unreasonable anyway.
And the exhaustion, I lose about two days with the exhaustion.

I have a plain copper coil. My periods are rotton for the first two days.
Not to mention " who just stuck a snooker cue up my arse" pain, period pains shooting down the back of my thighs, and looking like one of the walking dead.
I,ll be 44 this year, and tbh can,t wait to start the menopause.

Surely something can be done? I cannot imagine men would ever put up with the likes of this discomfort each and every month.
I have an aches lower back, crampy tummy and exhaustion.

Argh, that sounds shit. Can you talk to your GP and look at other options - implant? Pill?

I also have disgusting period pain, and had my first mirena fitted last month. Waiting to see if it does the trick.

Good luck, I sympathise. Go back to dr until they find a solution - no reason you should be in pain.

I find as i get older, i have a " fuzzy" head for a few days, concentration levels are awful.
I went on a big shop last week, I was walking round for hours! I had a shopping list with me too. Tis shite.

Jen, are you taking a multivitamin containing selenium and zinc? I found this made an enormous difference to my mood, to the point where I can actually pull myself up and think 'hey, you're premenstrual, chill' and so not bite the heads off DH and the DCs. It made a really big difference to me.

I agree with the exhaustion, that does last 2 days. I have no energy whatsoever today and will have none tomorrow. I should not still be up, but can't unwind and can hear DH snoring even down here (but I snore too, so I'll stick to our current arrangement which means the snoree is allowed to poke, prod and pull the snorer until they stop).

If you have a microwave at work, I would also suggest getting one of those what pillows you can heat up. They are the absolute best for the pain *(alongside heavy painkillers, obviously)

I went back on the pill at 42 for this reason (plus I used to throw up and was wiped out for a week). And my acne cleared up. It sucks to be us.

I recommend the mini pill - Cerazette specifically. Been on it years and have not had a period or a pregnancy. Glorious thing!

My dm is in perimenopause at 58 and I think her periods have been playing up - pain wise and heavier flow etc

Unbelieveable to think where we are with innovation and we still have to suffer. I will get me to the doctors as weel to try and see if there is anything I can do , perhaps the mini pill would be a solution.
I will also pop over tot he health and look at the joys of being peri menopausal.

I cannot recommend ablation enough- had my uterus heated in June and haven't had a period since- has changed my life but Downside is I can never have hrt. If you are in pain just tell the gp you don't want to screw with your hormones and you should be able to get in on nhs. Good luck, hope you find something that works

My friend had abalation and I wasn't sure about that with regards to no HRT. To be honest I don't know enough about HRT to make an informed choice.
I will now go read up on this too.

For myself, all my terrible period pain and flooding was cured when I went on the contraception pill at 26. At 39 I came off it to TTC and everything got worse. All through my 40s not only did I fail TC, but the periods became more painful.
My sister remained on the Pill until she was 55, came off it and was through the menopause and didn't have any symptoms and sailed through those years.
