Dreaming, but am I "properly" asleep?

I am a poor sleeper if I have something on my mind. Didn't feel like I slept last night, rather was just very relaxed in bed. However, I can recall a couple of dream fragments. Do you have to be fully asleep to dream?

I can dream on the edge of REM/light sleep... it's a very fine line. Have experienced similar to you in the past too but dream fragments usually mean at least some sleep has been had, even if only a little poor quality sleep.
