OK, here goes - was considering name change but my name seemed aomehow appropriate.

I have a chest infection which started a few days ago (I had a cold too which is clearing up now) I keep coughing up lumps of really hard dark green phlegm, they are like really hard bogies but they are coming out of my chest, and there's loads of it when I wake up in the morning, and..and..there's green phlegm with orange streaks in it and even the odd fleck of blood. And it tastes DISGUSTING, I can't possibly describe it. And my chest is on fire.

Is it normal, for a chest infection? Or do I need to go to the doc?

Sorry Blush

are you on ABs? Do you have a general temperature?

Greensleeves · 20/04/2006 12:19

No, no AB's, and no temp either - I actually feel OK, apart from the remains of my cold and my painful chest. I'm not actually coughing either.

I don't know, but if it was me, I would go to the doctor!

jampots · 20/04/2006 12:20

yes go to GP today - anything green isnt normal

alexsmum · 20/04/2006 12:20

go to the doctor!!!!!! you need anti-biotics!!!!

chapsmum · 20/04/2006 12:22

hiya greeny. Poor you!
You definately need some antibiotics. If you carry on coughing the crap up I wouldn't be surprised if they send you for a chest X-ray.
You feeling Short of Breath?
How long have you had the cough for?

Greensleeves · 20/04/2006 12:24

That's the thing, I'm not actually coughing violently - just sort of clearing the crap out every so often and then having to run to spit it out....I did warn you it was TMI!! I don't really feel ill. And I hate going to the doctors.

I am a bit short of breath, now you mention it, but I think it's just because my chest is inflamed.

apparently (on googling) green phlegm is one that has been in the body for a long time

JoolsToo · 20/04/2006 12:40

from further googling Dr JT diagnosis is bronchitis

Kelly1978 · 20/04/2006 12:40

agree, go to the drs. At the least, you need ABs, and I'd be a bti worried by what you are describing.

Nbg · 20/04/2006 12:44

Sounds normal to me but I am asthmatic so when I get a chest infection thats the sort of stuff that comes up and yes it is rather revolting.

The flecks of blood will be from bringing the stuff up.

spacecadet · 20/04/2006 12:48

hi, you say you have a chest infection, did you visit the gp?
the fact that you are coughing it up is a good sign as it means that you are clearing your airways, problems arise when you are unable to cough.
the fact that you are coughing up foul smelling phlegm indicates that infection is or has been present in your lungs, it could be bacterial or viral, if viral, no abs are neccassary and coughing up the phlegm will clear your lungs, if bacterial, then you probably need a course of abs.
make a doctors appt.

Greensleeves · 20/04/2006 12:53

OK, I'll make an appt with the GP.

Thanks everyone:)

Dh came home early from work the other day declaring dramatically that he was sneezing blood! He was already on ABs for sinusitis but it made me smile as he clearly thought he was suffering symptoms no-one had had before. The last time I had sinusitis, I was pg and could not take ABs and sneezing blood was the least of it! Men eh?

Hope you feel better soon Greensleeves!

blueshoes · 20/04/2006 13:05

The dark green phlegm sounds a lot like dd a few weeks ago. Doctor said she had a bacterial infection of the chest and prescribed anti-biotics. Go see your GP!
