Antibiotic side effects - insomnia, changed taste of breastmilk?? Help!!

Been prescribed Clarythromicin (sp?) for a chest infection and have been taking 2 a day for 3 days.

For the last 2 nights I haven't slept. I've been wide awake until past 2 am and then very fitful/wakeful sleep until 5/6 when I've been waking up with my heart pounding. I usually am in bed asleep by 11pm, don't drink coffee in the afternoons or anything else that could disturb my sleep like this, but have googled it and found it is a known side effect.

Also, my toddler (just gone 2yrs) has started unlatching the minute my milk comes down and saying its 'yukker' - again this is totally new, only started since I started the course Sad

Now I did tell the dr I was still BF and he looked a bit Hmm but said this antibiotic was fine to take anyway.

I know how important it is to finish a course of antibiotics but I can;t not sleep for a week and am not happy for BFing to end this way. What should I do though? Given that it is weekend (I only put 2 and 2 together this morning else would have rung drs yesterday)

I also have THE most HORRIFIC taset in my mouth 24/7 which on its own I would put up with but if that is how my BM is now tasting I can't blame my toddler for his opinion! I'd taste it myself but have no sense of taste at the mo, due to combo of nasty taste in mouth and totally blocked nose.

I'm on the same medicine, don't have the bad taste but am struggling to sleep at night and quite cosy in the day. I feel as if it's definitely dried me out on the mucus front. I have heard it can make you mouth taste horrid but luckily I've escaped that. Feel better soon.

Thanks. I am just struggling as no sleep at night doesn't make two small children any easier to deal with (no partner) and I am gojng to be gutted if DS tops BF because of this :(

I'm a single mum with two kids too. Hope it gets better. It's only for a week so I've got three more days to go. I meant to write dozy not cosy in the day time ie sleepy! Do you have any stored pumped milk you could use?

LiftWantedAroundTheWorld · 05/01/2013 21:55

Nope - never been able to pump a drop!

No fun is it, being ill when you are alone with small kids.

I have just finished a 3 week course of the same antibiotic, i had a constant metallic taste in the mouth and my tongue turned a yellow colour. Had no trouble sleeping but did get a few episodes of palpatations as well.
