Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Twinklystar - me too! Which is spooky as we almost share the same name.... PM me or start a thread for me on the conception boards if you want to chat or support each other?

OH and I have been doing dry Jan since 31st Dec, ie, we had our last drink on 30 Dec. We have been ttc for 18 months now so we're getting uber healthy to see if it helps.

We found Friday night really hard but gave ourselves a good talking to for being so pathetic! Last night we went for a meal and walked the half hour there and back to distract ourselves as being in the house in the evening is a temptation.

I met a friend and we went for coffee then we went to the pub and had juice.

Feeling very proud of myself and OH!

We are also giving up aspartame so no fizzy drinks allowed here :( Have been having organic herbal or decaf tea or water(!) to get me through!

Well done to all who have managed to stay on the wagon and to those who have fallen off just pick yourself up again!

twinklestar2 · 06/01/2013 12:34

I also agree with the feeling positive because we are aiming for something comment. However I try not go think too much about doing it for baby making but also that its good for my health. Which is a good enough reason to do it.

rubberglove · 06/01/2013 12:55

I do find I am eating more cake and chocolates though thus probably undoing any good calorie wise!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 06/01/2013 13:06

This morning was the first morning that I bounced out of bed feeling great. I've also kicked caffeine and chocolate but am succeeding in eating everything else I can find and it usually takes my body a few days to get over the shock.

When I feel like this I wonder why I end up back on the slippery slope of wine every evening (and large amounts of coffee each morning).

determinedma · 06/01/2013 15:52

Day 6 and still here. Longest I've been without booze for many many months/years

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 06/01/2013 16:21

Well done determinedma Smile

Sleepingbunnies · 06/01/2013 17:08

I'm getting through red bulls like there is no tomorrow...

Almostfifty · 06/01/2013 17:08

Day four here, worst time is weekends IMO, as we've never drunk on school nights.

I'm trying to lose half a stone as well, so trying to keep off fizzy drinks as well. I'm not keen on slimline drinks.

Doshusallie · 06/01/2013 17:31

Well done everyone. Am out and about with dcs so that is helping tonight.

Day 6 although tbh I often go more. I can not drink indefinitely if I am not out much but have several things in the next fortnight where I will just have to drink lime and soda. I try to think of the hangover I will avoid as as I get older I cannot tolerate them Good luck this week everyone. Fizzy elderflower quite nice and pm i have camomile tea

tuffinmop · 06/01/2013 17:35

Still not drinking but I opened a Christmas present meant for my step nan (never got to see her, we all had colds) and ate 8 quality streets Blush

Oh dear chocolate is now a wine substitute!

rubberglove · 06/01/2013 17:41

Dh trying to convince me that red wine is better for me than all the chocolate I am eating Hmm

diabolo · 06/01/2013 18:22

me too determinedma - longest without for about 8 years.

Ruprekt · 06/01/2013 18:33

Well done! We are doing so well.

determinedma · 06/01/2013 20:12

well done diabolo

cuppateaanyone · 06/01/2013 21:13

Thought tonight I would really fancy a glass but both me and dh couldn't stand the idea of it, really strange, what I really fancy right now is a lovely cold glass of water.........odd.

DewDr0p · 06/01/2013 21:17

Argh I really fancy a small glass of red right now... Dh is distracting me with decaf coffee and Christmas cake!

Matildaduck · 06/01/2013 21:20

I have not missed wine for the last few nights at all.... i had a bottle of sparkling fruity water and it was delish.

My skin looks great also.

6 days down and it doesn't feel that long at all.

cuppateaanyone · 06/01/2013 21:21

Hang in there DEwDr0p, cravings tend to last 15 o so mins so get yourself through that and pat yourself on the back.
I foresee many early nights this month!

glitch · 06/01/2013 21:29

Well done everyone. 6 days and 1 weekend ticked off.
It is great to wake up with a clear head each morning.

DewDr0p · 06/01/2013 21:39

Thanks cuppa - the Christmas cake isn't really cutting it I have to say Grin - might have to bring out the big guns ... Crisps! (My other vice)

TWinklyLittleStar · 06/01/2013 21:44

Are they good crisps or crap crisps DewDr0p?

Another one in the 'great skin' camp.

Schoolsec · 06/01/2013 21:44

please can I join? I will start tomorrow (back to school then and have had wine tonight). Had so much over Xmas but drink most nights. Glad I'm not alone. Need to break the habit cos despite going to the gym I have a definite chardonnay belt ...

DewDr0p · 06/01/2013 21:55

Small packet of Kettle Chips twinkly (have to buy small packets else I'd trough a big packet in one sitting - addictive personality, moi? Grin )

It's not really worked though, might have to go to bed!

CJMommy · 06/01/2013 22:16

Hey can I join too? Not had a drink since 31st jan (finished my wine just before midnight). I'm also doing MFP calorie counting and cutting down in caffeine too! I'm sure what I drink is contributing to me being 2 stone overweight! Blush

Am out with friends on 12th jan so will be having a drink then ( haven't seen them in months ) then I want to carry it through until 12th feb , so ultimately will have done 6 weeks dry except one night.

I'm drinking squash but also trying to endure I drink more water in general. My day used to consist of several coffees, a can of coke zero and then either 1/2 bottle of wine or hone measured vodka and coke.

Didn't go too overboard at Christmas but agree with everyone who has said about habits-that applies to me with food and drinkBlush

So, Tuesday will be one week without booze and first weekly weigh in after diet startedGrin
