Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Thanks gazza, very kind of you to say. I hope so too.

Matilda - it's free drinks and food at a posh London hotel! I'd be mad to say no. I've donated £15 to charity as my golden pass and will stick to my 2-drink limit.

gazzalw · 29/01/2013 09:20

Smile twinklestar2....

Actually I think if I was offered free booze I would have difficulty resisting temptation....

Matildaduck · 29/01/2013 19:36

I was teasing! :-) not jelous at all that i don't get to go to posh hotels anymore

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/01/2013 22:56

Tomorrow is my birthday Smile. That has traditionally been the day to go wild, with chocolate cake and a double espresso for breakfast, and gallons of wine in the evening. But I'm holding out until Saturday to celebrate with DH in our new house.

I didn't sleep well last night, and have had a banging headache all day, so no temptation here.

twinklestar2 - enjoy your posh night out!

twinklestar2 · 30/01/2013 08:54

Thanks all!

You know what, the posh night out wasn't worth it. I drank more than I said I would and went to bed crying about not being pregnant and have a banging headache this morning :(

Matildaduck · 30/01/2013 09:07

Oh twinkle poor you. this will be the year you will be pregnant!!!

XX

twinklestar2 · 30/01/2013 10:00

Thanks Matilda. I'm def sticking to my 2-drink limit from now on. It's not worth it!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 30/01/2013 12:48

Oh twinkle, sorry to hear that. I hope the headache has gone away, and that this will be your year.

gazzalw · 30/01/2013 17:23

Happy Birthday NeitherShreddedNorSmug....!

TWinklyLittleStar · 30/01/2013 18:04

Happy birthday Neither

How's the head twinkle2?

I could have gone for a nice glass of wine today, though now I just feel like crap so the urge has gone off me somewhat.

WentworthMillerMad · 30/01/2013 21:27

I am still here on a dry and January! Never drink mid week so can't wait until Friday night. Simon mayo on and a large glass of white wine!
Most friends in RL have done dry Jan as well and all stuck to it so its been quite easy.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 30/01/2013 23:33

Thank you gazza and TWinkly!

My team turned up with champagne to make bucks fizz at our 9.15 meeting this morning (they are all a lot younger than me Grin), along with doughnuts and bagels to soak it all up. I let them me a small bucks fizz, and asked for it to be very weak since I'd been on a dry January but didn't drink it. It was still on my desk at midday so I had a couple of sips and tipped the rest away.

I had a thumping headache from the sugar in the doughnuts and felt bloated with the extra carb from the bagels. But despite sounding like I'm an ungrateful old moaner, I did feel very blessed to have such lovely caring people around me today.

gazzalw · 31/01/2013 06:14

This is interesting...I think what it's showing is that once you've got out of the habit...you actually even lose a taste for it....I think your birthday treat yesterday shows that NeitherShreddingNorSmug? Glad your colleagues treated you though...and hope your headache eased off....?

We haven't decided what to do yet about February but certainly I have noticed a big difference in my personal spending power by just not drinking so that I would like to hold on to....

Well we've made it to Day 31...hurrah....What a sense of achievement....

If so many people have given up the booze I wonder if the drinks industry has noticed a dip in sales of wine/alcohol - it would be interesting to find out don't you think?

Matildaduck · 31/01/2013 06:44

I'm super impressed with us all...well done!

31 days dry. Tomorrow i'm cutting caffeine out completely. This will be harder i fear.
I'm also planning to excercise everyday.

gazzalw · 31/01/2013 07:19

Wow....Matildaduck...

DW is contemplating doing the 5:2 diet but is wondering, with the DCs, how feasible that really would be...

We are really considering just making drinking alcohol a high days and holidays activity....ha, let's see how long the good intentions last!

Almostfifty · 31/01/2013 13:07

Just one night to go! Haven't we done well?

Snowkey · 31/01/2013 14:58

Yeah we're nearly done - I have a sore throat that better be gone by tomorrow because it will seriously put a dampener on that first glass of champagne.

twinklestar2 · 31/01/2013 15:02

Well done everybody!!

I'm contemplating a dry February!

TWinklyLittleStar · 31/01/2013 15:56

Me too.

I still miss wine too much to be healthy!

spudmasher · 31/01/2013 20:09

A sincere, heartfelt thanks to everyone on this thread- it's really helped me change my drinking habits just knowing people were here to sympathise.
Well done everyone for lasting the month and those little slip ups will go unmentioned!!!
I will have a lovely evening at my friends birthday tomorrow and stop drinking at the right time! I would miss my clear head too much now!
See you all next January.....or maybe even June!

Matildaduck · 31/01/2013 21:37

Today i bought my fav red from my fav year!

I will savour this wine like no other :-)

Almostfifty · 31/01/2013 22:04

I can't make my mind up what to start with. Beer or champagne?

twinklestar2 · 31/01/2013 22:04

Enjoy your first drink everyone!

TWinklyLittleStar · 31/01/2013 22:48

Yes, do enjoy your first drink everybody. Like spudmasher I have really enjoyed being able to come here and share this experience. Have a lovely year all, and maybe see you next year.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 31/01/2013 23:54

Thank you all for your support and chat this month, it's been great knowing I haven't been alone. Enjoy those first drinks (but not too much Grin).

Matilda - hope the caffeine free goes well.
