Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

I am on day 20, and have only lost 2lbs. Sad Mind, I have been exercising a lot and am definitely more toned. My DH thinks I've put on muscle and look better than I did, my tum is definitely flatter! I only need a few pounds off, so will keep trying.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/01/2013 02:49

Here's an interesting article on how alcohol affects sleep, just to keep us going for the last few days.

Large grapefruit juice for me with dinner this evening Grin

Matildaduck · 23/01/2013 06:42

11lb wow well done!

Almost, i am the same as you, 2 lb but more toned.

Off to read the article.

gazzalw · 23/01/2013 07:16

I would wholeheartedly agree with that article NeitherShreddingNorSmug!

Well done everyone....the end is more than in sight...Yes, it's been good to stand back and evaluate one's drinking.... not necessarily a comfortable thing to do...

I think it is considerably more difficult if you are tempted because you have a DP who is not abstaining...DW and I are doing it together and the competitive edge (who will crack first?) is egging us on!

glitch · 23/01/2013 07:52

Well done everyone who has lost weight. I have lost nothing. I think I may drink rather than eat usually Blush and have eaten a ton of rubbish this month.
I have taken myself in hand and have signed up to WW to shift the ½ stone of christmas weight.

That article is interesting neithershredded. My sleep is definitely more refreshing and I don't seem to need as much whilst not drinking. In fact the more I think about it, I do really like the feeling of not drinking. Someone please remind me of that at the end of feb Grin

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/01/2013 13:08

glitch as I just said on the 30 day shred thread I don't think i've lost any weight either, although I'm a bit more toned with all the exercise I've done this month. I do feel better though, and have had some really late nights and felt fine the next morning (even though I've also kicked caffeine Smile).

gazzalw · 23/01/2013 17:40

Wow that's amazing kicking alcohol and caffeine!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/01/2013 23:29

Thank you gazza. I do it every year, turn into a growling monster for the first week of Jan, and feel better eventually. Then start all over again in Feb Smile.

PenguinsDancing · 23/01/2013 23:34

Hi. Have just found this thread - I'm on day 23 of dry January and just generally feel so much better for it had got into the habit of drinking every day which is ridiculous

Now I think I should think of something else to give up next month!

Matildaduck · 24/01/2013 08:15

Penguines...how about caffeine? I'm cutting it down, i'm on two cups of tea a day now..bloody headache is back.

I thought i might climax with a detox weekend the end of feb. originaly i thought it might be nice to stay of the booze until march but i'm not sure i can go that long.

It's only a week now!! Have to say i haven't spent any money with the snow and not drinking :-0

Also my dh who nags about my drinking has not once mentioned it!

twinklestar2 · 24/01/2013 08:16

I'm kicking my one fag a day habit in feb!

Well done everyone, only a week to go!

Matildaduck · 24/01/2013 08:23

Well done twinkle, smoking is way harder to beat than being dry. Are you starting a thread?

gazzalw · 24/01/2013 08:41

Yikes, DW had a bad headache for about a week after starting the Dryathalon and she commented that it was like a caffeine withdrawal headache. Don't think she could have managed both....And I love my cup of real coffee in the morning...

She is considering trying the 5:2 diet in February....although she is wondering how easy it is to resist temptation when you are cooking for a family who do not need to be on it!

Matildaduck · 24/01/2013 08:53

Yes i had that headache also! I'm fine without caffeine post 11.00 i just seem to need it to kick start my day. Will be interesting to see if it's managable.

BirdyBedtime · 24/01/2013 09:02

Just found this thread so hello. DH and I have been doing this (well since the 4th, as we were away with friends til then and starting no alcohol would have been realy hard). So a bit of a cheat but anyway, nothing since then. DH is finding it harder than I do as he really likes a beer in the evening but it's more habit than anything, and quite often he is working so doesn't have anything. He cracked and bought some alcohol-free beer yesterday - it was OK (I drank various brands during both pregnancies). Only a week to go though - hurray. We are also going to stop alcohol during the week, and as DH works nights 2/5 weekends, will be drinking much less after Jan too. I have to say I haven't lost any weight but have been sleeping better.

TWinklyLittleStar · 24/01/2013 14:52

I want wine. So much.

gazzalw · 24/01/2013 16:01

It's only 7 days to o TwinklyLittleSTar...you are on the countdown now....

Snowkey · 24/01/2013 16:20

Me too I want it to be next Friday NOW!!!! I miss my glass of wine Sad.

gazzalw · 24/01/2013 16:22

of course I meant go and not o!

yes are we going to have a virtual party next Friday with not too much Wine?

Matildaduck · 24/01/2013 18:05

No, not too much, one glass will probably send me tiddly :-)

Almostfifty · 24/01/2013 21:49

Just one week to go. This time next week it will be one sleep. Haven't we done well?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 24/01/2013 23:17

We are all marvellous Grin

gazzalw · 25/01/2013 08:03

I'm not sure that's what hepatology doctors would be saying...They would probably be frowning at the fact that we are intending to start indulging again so soon....Grin

Matildaduck · 25/01/2013 08:08

No not at all gazza, i don't think i will drink in the week again. It will change my habits. I feel and look so much better.

I'm going to spend £50 today as a reward ( it's what i would have just drunk away.)

twinklestar2 · 25/01/2013 09:09

I had champagne last night!! I met my friend and she'd already got me a glass and then we were depressed about being old and childless and proceeded to have a couple more! Sorry girls I'm not very good at this!

The plus side is I would have drunk waaaaay more than this normally so I'm not doing too badly.

I've realised my trigger times are when out with friends. At home I can give or take it.
