Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Oh dear.....Nuclearstandoff....sad for you.....Hope he's feeling suitably shame-faced this morning....

TWinklyLittleStar · 13/01/2013 12:21

He drove you and your children home when he had had that much to drink? Fuck that nuclear, that's a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned. Does he often break laws under the influence?

NuclearStandoff · 13/01/2013 12:22

I wish he felt guilty gazzalw but he never does ... somehow it is always my fault for being 'no fun'.

twinklestar2 · 13/01/2013 12:42

I feel for you nuclear and I'd be mad about the drink driving.

noddyholder · 13/01/2013 12:44

I am going for lunch today at friend who is the best cook and will be most offended by me not drinking Help!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 13:06

tuffinmop - I'd be happy to stay on and chat into February. This month is probably going to be quite easy for me, as DH is away and I don't tend to drink on my own. But once we are together again I know there will be more temptation to drink, and I'll soon be back to where I was, knocking back wine on the sofa every night. I'm feeling so good without it that I really don't want to end up back there.

Nuclear sorry to hear about your DH. I think it's been said before on this thread that our not drinking exposes how much those around us are drinking, and quite possibly makes them feel uncomfortable/guilty etc, which they then take out on others - it's easier to tell you you're no fun than it is to face the face that he might not be able to stop or moderate his drinking as well as you have. Please don't think I'm making excuses for your DH - I'm not - and he certainly should not have driven, however short the distance.

noddy stay strong! Tell him/her you want a clean palate to taste the food Smile

noddyholder · 13/01/2013 13:15

Smile I want to keep going

Ruprekt · 13/01/2013 13:25

Just say you find that wine/alcohol is not agreeing with you so you are having a break from it.

Still be fun and entertaining though!!!! Grin

Water and peppermint tea again last night for DH and I!

nkf · 13/01/2013 13:27

I was going to do a year off the booze but will join for January. Only I did have a rum and coke yesterday.

That's all so far this month. I feel a lot better so will continue. Last night was a blip.

FurryDogMother · 13/01/2013 14:38

Only just found this thread... been off the booze since Jan 1st, making this Day 13. I spot a couple of fellow Low Carb Bootcampers here! I'm planning on staying dry until March 17th (St Patrick's Day, and I live in Ireland) - which is, coincidentally, around about the time my home made wine (1 gallon each of blackberry, elderflower, orange blossom and rose petal) will be ready for tasting.

So far, it's not too bad - though the evenings are dragging a bit. I did 6 weeks off drink before Christmas, but indulged FULLY over the holidays, think I'm an all or nothing type!

One thing I just realised, whilst reading through the previous 15 pages - I've always thought of myself as less disciplined than my (ex RAF) husband - I'm the self-indulgent one who eats too much, drinks too much, and always takes the path of least resistance - HOWEVER - I'm the one who can stop drinking for weeks at a time (he has managed 1 week, once or twice), smoking (for 3 months, went back to it when drunk, silly me, must do it again) - which he never has, even with Champix, and eating the wrong stuff (almost 5 stone off since August), whereas he has never, in 16 years, tried to lose his tummy! I think I'm beginning to grow some self-respect (finally, at age 53). WHY have I always seen myself as the undisciplined one? Makes no sense!

Anyway - well done all who've made it this far - I'm here for the duration!

Ruprekt · 13/01/2013 22:28

Now, not drinking has become a habit!

yay me!!!! Grin

nkf · 13/01/2013 22:51

Is everyone feeling the benefits? I know I am. Less lethargic. And I may be deluding myself or need new spectacles but I think my skin looks better.

twinklestar2 · 13/01/2013 22:57

Nkf me and oh noticed that the other week. It's round the eyes.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 13/01/2013 23:43

Yes, I am feeling more with it and sleeping better (and waking up early at weekends - amazing how much you can get done by 9am).

Yay Ruprekt!

Matildaduck · 14/01/2013 08:04

It's not in your imagination, my skin looks way better!

Were at the half way point now. I also feel the habit is broken.

So usually i spend aound £6 on a bottle of wine so i have saved around £24 in this two weeks. That will be £50 ( at least) this month....treat time ??

Lottapianos · 14/01/2013 08:58

How is everyone this morning? I can honestly say I love this not drinking thing! Had a mate round for dinner on Saturday, cooked coq au vin and really fancied a glass of red with it but resisted. Went out for breakfast yesterday and head was as clear as a bell - no nausea, sweats, raging thirst or headache. When I do go back to drinking it will be in strict moderation and with absolutely NO hangovers Allowed!

TWinklyLittleStar · 14/01/2013 09:55

I'm very well this morning, I'm genuinely not struggling at the moment, although the weekend after next I'm out for a friend's birthday, so that will be a challenge. Not drinking combined with cutting right down on sugar (except fruit sugars) means the jeans that didn't fit at all after Christmas fit nicely again. Yay! (they are big jeans, I still have a long way to go, but one step at a time.)

Snowkey · 14/01/2013 10:12

Still going! Have lost 5lbs so far on no sugar or alcohol (and the 5:2 diet). Finding dry Jan fairly easy this year....have thought about having a glass of wine yesterday while I made a special dinner, but more out of habit really, I always associate cooking with drink - call be Floyd! If I manage to get my muffin top under control, I'm going to treat myself to a pair of posh jeans - cause I'm worth it! And I don't have a pair of blue jeans that fit properly.

tuffinmop · 14/01/2013 21:43

Evening Ladies!

TWinklyLittleStar · 14/01/2013 21:53

Evening!

After saying I hadn't struggled this morning, I struggled a bit this evening, because I was home alone all day and wanted a pizza and a glass of wine. Fortunately there wasn't any in the house.

tuffinmop · 14/01/2013 21:55

oops what happened there??

Well done all, half way there tomorrow yey!
Struggled a bit tonight if im honest, husband out till late, own space, cooking own food, to own music as loud as I like..... I could have murdered a cool crisp pinot.... Grin

tuffinmop · 14/01/2013 21:56

But I didn't have one I hasten to add!

tuffinmop · 14/01/2013 21:57

Cross posts twinkly Good for us we resisted, well done x

Katiekitty · 14/01/2013 22:04

Another day 14-er here.
Not a drop since New Year's Eve.
Been bloody hard at times.
I've surprised myself with the will power thus far.

Well done to everyone here

twinklestar2 · 14/01/2013 22:39

Well done everyone!

For me the cravings have gone. I don't really drink at home and I haven't been out with friends to get tempted.

I've found that sometimes I drink to relieve stress and reward myself with a glass of wine but I've realised if I let those feelings of stress pass the need goes too.
