Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Well done. Think about how good you'll feel in the morning!

Ruprekt · 09/01/2013 22:31

9 days without an alcoholic drink.

I feel sooooooooooooooo much better.

Am also low carbing with the Mumsnet Gang so will report weight loss soon.

Still going, lost 3lbs of Christmas weight...starting to feel better. Sleep has been awful though but that's nothing new!

kotinka me too, but not a drop of wine has passed my lips.. Why oh why can't I be this disciplined about food??

twinklestar2 · 10/01/2013 09:39

Anyone else noticed their skin is so much better? My husband is the sane, the lines around his eyes are less pronounced.

twinklestar2 · 10/01/2013 09:39

*same

AnonymousBird · 10/01/2013 09:59

Slept so well AGAIN, but gazza - yes to fuzzy headed, when I first wake up, just for a couple of minutes I think "oh no, I had some wine" and then I remember that I didn't, and I'm definitely finding it easier to get up, but the whole fuzziness thing is there....

Skin - will be interested to see if my skin improves. I have crap skin anyway (psoriasis), but suspect stopping booze will help some of it, but that will take a while I imagine.

Doshusallie · 10/01/2013 11:25

My eyes are definitely less puffy in the morning.

Matildaduck · 10/01/2013 11:50

Yes all of my face looks better but th frown line is much improved and eyes less puffy.

Not sure i want to return to drinking tbh, i'm going to cut out caffeine by the end of this month. I'm doing it slowly as i drink a lot of tea!

It ill be interesting to see how i feel and look without tea.

gazzalw · 10/01/2013 18:08

Have to say the thought of drinking today just makes me cringe...It is definitely making me review my bad drinking habits....it's quite alarming looking at my drinking patterns from one remove...

Yes, DW does say she always assumed her fuzzy head was because of the alcohol but she still has it when she wakes up so obviously not the alcohol....

Also noticed that I'm generally drinking a lot more fluid which can only be a good thing....

Ruprekt · 10/01/2013 21:25

Another day on the wagon!!!

Have lost 7lbs.

Very chuffed.

tuffinmop · 10/01/2013 22:18

Day 10 done and dusted! Nearly cracked today but managed to resist!
Another vote for clearer skin and great sleep

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 10/01/2013 22:25

Well done all!

Matilda I have cut out caffeine too. I had awful headaches every afternoon for the first 3 or 4 days, but have been OK since. Good luck if you decide to go for it!

Day 10 for me too, though it's only 5.30 where I am. No plans to drink this evening.

glitch · 10/01/2013 22:27

Well done everyone. Day 10 done here too.
I think I must drink usually because I am bored as the evenings are just dragging by at the moment. I am trying to resist food as a substitute but it is hard.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do of an evening except watch dull TV (I am a lone parent so I have to be at home).

Badgersnatch · 10/01/2013 22:39

I'm still dry, despite having had a piercing today and feeling the need for a painkilling gin - any excuse Grin.

notnowdarling · 10/01/2013 22:48

Day 10 and doing ok. 3rd year of doing this. Haven't noticed any physiological benefits in previous years, but has broken the cycle of automatically pouring a glass of wine without thinking. Have discovered rose syrup infused with cardamom. Nice with sparkling water. Unfortunately, remember that end of week 3 is the worst!

twinklestar2 · 10/01/2013 23:06

Notnow - do you go back to drinking as you were after Jan or do you find that it helps you to cut back for the rest of the year?

Matildaduck · 11/01/2013 09:47

Neither, i'm cutting down daily as i'm worried about the effect :-)

have to say i am still shocked at how different i feel without drinking. I feel more more alert and have more energy, i feel less snappy toward DH and children. Anyone else feel this?

Glitch can you sew or knit or craft anything?....you could learn or get a yoga or excercise video if your home alone. Read maybe or enrole for an OU course.

I think there is load of good stuff we could all do we just get sucked in by watching the TV.

Matildaduck · 11/01/2013 09:50

Oh almost forgot i have lost 2lb which is astonishing considering how much more i ate.

I'm starting excercising today so expect this to improve.

Bishopstonmum · 11/01/2013 11:54

Hi all, I started on Sunday so have done 5 days. Feel I am sleeping better already.Time to give my liver a good rest! Tidying up all the chocolate in the house though as it goes very well with a cup of tea...

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 11/01/2013 13:03

glitch - so far this week I've knitted some squares for a blanket, and a knocker for the Royal Brompton (see the Mumsnet threads); worked really hard on my OU (I'd let it go over Christmas so had lots of catching up to do); and exercised each evening (either 30 day shred DVD or a short run).

Oh, and one night I did some batch cooking so I didn't have to think about what to cook next week. I'm also on my own, and as I find cooking for one such a faff it's hard to resist the temptation to snack and eat rubbish. If I have proper meals in the freezer to bung in the microwave when I get in I eat far better.

It's amazing how much time there is in the evening when you're not sitting on the sofa with a glass in your hand (even though I've still been sitting on the sofa).

Matilda - wel done on the weight loss

twinklestar2 · 11/01/2013 17:16

Am I allowed tonight off for my birthday! I won't go mad promise!
