Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Twinkle star.....I agree, never had I had such poor sleep on consecutive nights. Am beginning to think something strange is afoot.....absolutely do not fancy a drink, at all, it's like the thought of it turns my stomach.
Am really hoping that I will get back to the long gone days of having wine on a Friday and or Saturday night and nothing else.
Have been asking myself why/ how I got to drinking so regularly, I don't think I drink much compared to my friends, 3 regular glasses in an evening is my max, and a school night its less it's like it became 'what you do and what everyone else does'

Doshusallie · 07/01/2013 21:02

Dh is really struggling with sleep too.....

Day 7 for me too!

determinedma · 07/01/2013 21:13

The sleep struggle is in part because you haven't had any booze to dull the edge and make you feel relaxed and fuzzy. Without that the brain just keeps galloping along and its impossible to switch off. Try a herbal sleeping tab until you adjust

glitch · 07/01/2013 23:03

Day 7 done - yay Grin
Am not finding it hard to sleep once asleep but I seem to be staying up much later. Is that due to better quality sleep do you think?

BettySuarez · 07/01/2013 23:08

Boots do a bottle of herbal sleeping tablets that I wholeheartedly recommend. They come in a green and yellow box and the brand is RSI or RTI - not 100% certain.

No drowsiness/sluggishness the following day. Just a restful and peaceful nights sleep. I take them during periods of stress as I find that they stop my mind racing at night.

Might be just the job for those of you struggling to sleep Smile

We are not missing the booze at all (so far)

Pollykitten · 07/01/2013 23:18

just wanted to butt in with sleep thing... there are herbal things from Holland & Barrett called Melissa Dreams that have l-theanine amino acid in, found naturally in green tea & give a more 'refreshing' sleep - finding it helpful Smile

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 08/01/2013 01:17

Day 7 for me too.

Cuppa I know what you mean about how/why you get to drinking every night. When DH and I are together we both drink a few glasses each evening. When one of us is away, the one who's at home tends not to drink Confused. He's gone until the end of the month, and I'm quite happy not drinking.

Matildaduck · 08/01/2013 07:58

I've slept really well, early night last night.
Try some meditation before sleep, nothing fancy just imagining all the stress flowing out of your body type of stuff. I discovered this when i had pregnancy insomnia. Its a lovely way to go to sleep. ( I had a hypnotherapy tape it was lovely.)

As i haven't missed drinking ( shocked) i might cut out caffine next month. I do feel that i have been relient on these drugs to get through the day.

My skin shows the abuse. :-(

diabolo · 08/01/2013 08:40

Day 7 done and dusted. Still sleeping really well.

I'm combining Dry January with 5:2 and doing the 30 Day Shred. I've lost 6lbs in 8 days and can do up my belt an extra hole already.

If I carry on like this, I can't see me ever going back to my old bad habits. I feel so good and proud of myself.

Doshusallie · 08/01/2013 10:42

well done Diabolo!! That's fantastic!!

I am also staying up later - would frequently fall asleep on the sofa before.

Thanks for herbal sleep remedy suggestions. Will get to Boots today hopefully

well done diabolo thats fab Grin
I on the other hand am eating my body weight in chocolate! Day 8 and still going strong I have surprised myself.

Godlessdomestic · 08/01/2013 12:40

I am replacing drink with cake I think.. Sad can anyone tell me about 5:2 - is it do-able? I really struggle with willpower (hence me being as fat as a house).

I am gaining weight not drinking. Go figure.

Badgersnatch · 08/01/2013 17:24

6lbs? Well done!

I've got the start of a cold and even my eyebrows are aching today, which should keep me on the straight and narrow for a while longer.

diabolo · 08/01/2013 17:29

Thanks, I think it's mostly due to the Shredding, makes me sweat like a big, sweaty thing.

gazzalw · 08/01/2013 18:27

It's Day 8....but now I'm starting to think more about a glass of cold white wine more than I have done to date....

Hoping that maybe we will all feel better two weeks down the line....we are probably all still in the detox/feeling horrible phase at the moment but should emerge the other side brighter and more bushy tailed.

By the way one of DW's friends did the same thing a few years ago and she too said she didn't lose any weight....

Gazza I actually got a rush of saliva in my mouth when you described that wine. My name is dosh and I am clearly an alcoholic.

Epic fail today. 4 vodkas at a team lunch :(

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 19:35

Just a thought although I'm not joining you :- measure yourselves as I lost over an inch round my middle when I did no alcohol Novbef

cuppateaanyone · 08/01/2013 19:56

So far I have put on 3lbs......outrageous! Today I could easily have given in but it's passed for now.....

Schoolsec · 08/01/2013 21:48

DH away and seriously thought about popping into the co-op on the way home for those pre-chilled bottles of wine (how convenient is that ?!!). Resisted though and drove straight home. Had cup of tea and tesco flavoured fruit water.
Have realised I sometimes drink cos I'm thirsty! That's why I knock back the first glass so quickly. Couldn't sleep last night but hoping will b ok today .

Doshusallie · 08/01/2013 21:50

Dh on the Kalms....
