I have scalp psoriasis. apparently

It used to flare up, then come and go but a year ago I found a small patch about the size of a pound coin of completely shiny bald scalp at the top / back of my head. Around the bald area is bad psoriasis. Since then more has fallen out and now I have a bald patch about 4 inches across by 2 inches. It's now nearly at my crown and spreading. I have other small patches in other areas of my head. In March I saw a consultant dermo who said it was possible scaring allopecia & would never grow back - but obv it's getting bigger & I can't cover it any more.

I've been poorly recently and now have a bad flare up. Te whole back of my head right down to my hair line is now covered in psoriasis.

It goes in a cycle - be poorly, get painful lumps under scalp - psoriasis type scabs, then hair falls out & scalp red and shiny under.

GP seems very reluctant to do any thing but pescribe dovobet scalp application which is like a greasy steroid & I can't use it all the time because it hurts & makes my hair GROSE.

I'm 25. I don't want to have this.

How can I manage it better? Cover it up with some thing pretty?

It's itchy like mad & getting me down so much it's contributing massively to my depression.
I've been refered back to dermo but I don't think they will do much but look & chastise me for itching. Help!!

have you been tested for any auto immune disorders?

are you generally well otherwise?

OnlyWantsOne · 26/12/2012 23:01

Not tested no,

I'm ok. Small children & self employed so I'm pretty tired but I'm ok.
Not great, no energy, but ok.

I had a bout of ME type stuff in my late teens like glandular fever - I was 16/17/18 an really was poorly. I will some times still get non specific muscle pain which I put down to tiredness.

a friend of mine has lupus

her symptoms include

hair loss
depression
rash on her face (she thought it was just bad skin)
generally aches and fatigue

the symptoms come and go -sometimes she is symptom free, but she generally gets flair ups when she is stress, has been ill etc

I would be asking to be tested if I were you

Will try and ask my GP to help me rather than just treat the obvious symptoms. I want to feel well :(

Look up a condition called follicuitis decalvans. I have this and sounds very similar to what you are experiencing. (Big hugs to you)

OnlyWantsOne · 27/12/2012 04:59

Oh my! That's EXACTLY what it looks like!!!

Mine was only diagnosed after having a scalp biopsy, I had previously been treated for dermatitis and psoriasis which looking back was making it worse. My gp was worse than useless, he said said at one point i was washing my hair too much... i had to push for a dermatologist appointment and i was pretty much diagnosed strait away. The first line of treatment is antibiotics which completely cleared my scalp for a while. I have had it for 8 years now, I can't take the antibiotics long term anymore as they were doing funky thinks to my blood counts but I think it may have finally burnt out, I only have a patch on the back of my head now. My hair has come and gone over the years. And I am getting a lot of regrowth at the moment. I would ask your dermatologist next time you see him if it is possible you could have it.

don't worry. they give you a local anaesthetic first.

delllie · 27/12/2012 23:25

Not as bad as it sounds, they do numb the area and they only take a sliver ;)
