What could be wrong with my Dad?

For about 4 or 5 weeks he has had an awful muscular aching which is bearable on ibuprofen but always there. At night he is sometimes in agony he said. The Dr said it was prob a myalgic virus but it has been going on for so long now. At the beginning he was very tired too but is ok now on that front.

any ideas?

Could it be flu?, that can be agonising with muscular aches and pains. Should he go back to the GP for more tests? it is probably viral related, but even so, they should be able to put his mind at rest.

let us know how you get on!

A trip back to GP methinks - poor man. Five weeks is a long time when you are in constant pain. GP needs to know how much and how frequently your Dad is taking meds to combat the pain too. Hope the situation is resolved soon.

polymyalgia? (sp)

CountessDracula · 11/04/2006 19:55

Yes I thought of that but the symptoms don't really tie up apart from the aching

Is he on a statin for cholesterol as a side effect is muscle pain?

Some viral infections can cause muscle inflammation too.

He should probably have blood tests for ESR (which would be high with something like polymyalgia) and Ck which would be up if there was some kind of muscle inflammation or myositis going on.

Post viral syndrome is notorious for cuasing symptoms like that. CK ESR and CRP STAT!Grin God I love ER!!!!

Where are the aches? My mum has polymyalgia and, it sounds odd to say but sort of luckily for her, her symptoms are just the characteristic upper arm and upper thigh muscle aches. She doesn't have the jaw aches and headaches or other symptoms. She does get very tired but that's partly a side effect of the steroids I think.

They are all over, arms, legs, chest, everthing I think

Look up fibromyalgia. I am a sufferer and it sounds similar.

have a look at \link{http://www.arc.org.uk/about_arth/booklets/6013/6013.htm\this}

I was going to mention statins. Is he on any other drugs - muscle pain can be a side effect of some other drugs too.

CountessDracula · 12/04/2006 09:39

He is yes, but has been on them since his quadruple bypass 4 years ago, can these side effects have sudden onset after such a long time?

I would have thought it was unlikely that he would suddenly develop side effects after a long time, although it's possible I suppose (e.g. if something has changed - maybe he's started regularly using some over the counter medicine (e.g painkillers) which interacts with the prescribed drugs, or it could be that he's processing the statins differently to normal because he's been ill). Has he been to his GP with this? I think he needs to go.
