do tummy bugs affect people in different ways?

I started with a horrible, ghastly, tummy bug on Friday in the night with awful stomach cramps. When I got up I threw up the entire night before's dinner (too much info I know, sorry), and was sick literally all day even though all I did was to sip water. I also had shivers and aching limbs and was exhausted. This also lasted throughout Saturday night (I was sick every hour from 1-6am bringing up nothing but stomach bile, yuck) Over Sunday I was sick a couple of times but today I haven't been sick at all although I haven't dared to eat a thing, just drinking water.

Dd, who's nearly 4, woke up this morning and threw up in bed, just a little bit of clear spit. She's been sick about 3 times throughout the day but no diarrhea (like I had), no fever, seems generally ok in between being sick.

So ... is this the same bug? I'm living in vague fear that they are separate ones an I'm going to catch hers on top of just having had mine Sad

Also, has anyone had such a nasty bug as the one I described? I honestly don't think I've known anything like it, I'm never normally sick even if I feel nauseous. If you did have a bug like that, how long before it really seemed to lift and you could eat and drink properly again?

TIA, sorry for going on ...

when DH gets a tummy bug, he'll get a little diarrhoea for about 5 minutes. the same bug will leave me retching for days.

expatinscotland, thanks for that. I'm so glad I'm not alone with the retching for days. I've been so on the verge of being sick all day today, just doing odd little dry retches. How long before you shift that feeling you think?

Stomach bugs can affect different people in different ways. I remember DS1 coming home from nursery when he was 2 years old, throwing up on the carpet & then a few minutes later he was running around like he normally would. He was not sick again & we presumed it couldn't have been a bug, as he recovered so quickly.
A couple of days later both DH & myself woke in the night feeling very ill. We ended up spending the rest of the night in the toilet being ill & the following day we felt like death warmed up.
We had caught DS's stomach bug, but we were both really ill, where as other than the one vomit, you wouldn't have known DS was ill at all!

Dd's been like that a bit blueteddy. She suddenly slows down and goes quiet for a few minutes then says 'I feel a bit sick' gets her 'sick bowl', gets sick, then 5 minutes later is full on ready for play. I do wish it affected me like that!

Yes they can affect individuals differnetly. My son, and a friend's son, hav eboth had what sounds like the same bug over the last week or two, but none of their collective siblings (all 4 of them)or parents have succumbed, so it's obviously pretty random and not that contageous.

Hope you're feeling better soon - it's miserable, isn't it?

Big hugs, BL

It's really miserable. How long does it last do you think? As I said, I never get tummy bugs normally so this is really new to me and it's dd's first time too. Dp started with it last night and spent the night in the toilet.

This is my fourth day and still I can't eat and feel like retching - does that sound like too long?

Dd seems much worse this morning, she's not been sick since yesterday afternoon but she's doing nothing but lying face down on the bed not saying a word... Sad

Poor you.Sad
Some tummy bugs can drag on for a while I'm afraid. DS once had one that went on for nearly a week - I thought it would never end!
You could make an appointment with your gp if you are getting worried.
Sympathies though - stomach bugs are the pits.

i had a horrendous bug in august, i was ill for days, with a raging temp aswell, yet everyone else in the family was better in 2 days.

souvenir · 11/04/2006 09:47

OOO, how long before you stopped retching? I'm so fed up of it. I had chills and achy limbs for a couple of days but that seems to have gone.

souvenir-i was still retching on day 4 and felt nauseaus for a further 3 days. i was bedridden, ive never had a tummy bug hit me that bad before.
hope you are on the mend soonSmile
no joke but when i finally recovered from this bug, id lost 10 pounds! trouble is it all went back on again as soon as i started eating normally.

That's a relief to hear I'm not alone in having such a nasty bout. I thought I felt better yesterday but today I'm completely wiped out. And my trousers are feeling very loose already!

you feel wiped out for a while yet, when you do start eating, eat light, easy to digest foods.

I'm still retching believe it or not on day bloody 5 of this damned bug. I've also been feeling extremely weak and breathless so went to A&E today and they detected a urinary tract infection although I don't know if that's what's making me sick. I'm SO fed up ... Sad
