Mirena coil

Lizzer · 07/01/2002 12:41

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

jaden2366 · 21/08/2007 13:02

Hi I had my first mirena coil fitted in 96 and am now due for my third. apart from the first 3 months of it being fitted i have had no problems at all. i no longer have awful periods they have stopped completely. the only thing i find is that now it is ready to be changed i have begun to get pmt and very bad breast tenderness. i am not lookuing forward to having it replaced but i did try a year off it once and regretted it totally.

lab62 · 27/08/2007 09:55

Hi all,i have had the merina coil in for 2 years and iam no better off, Iam still bleeding in between i have gained 3stone iam depressed iam like a bear my hubby tells me, i also bloat like a puffer fish, cant get into clothes and iam so down would, I had a pelvic floor repair 6 weeks ago but i olso had my cervix amputated. After the operation i was glad that i had my cervix removed i thought well that one way of getting rid of the coil, i was then shocked that the surgeon had taken a small peice of skin and made me a false area to hold my new coil scream!!!!!!!!. Going to docs on thurs going to gat it removed .I thought i was losing it.

expatinscotland · 27/08/2007 10:04

Did you not tell them you wanted the coil out for good before they performed the surgery?

lab62 · 27/08/2007 13:40

Hi the fact is that i had only been going for a pelvic floor repair, i got the merina in 2 years ago. after the surgery i still felt unwell , was at the docs last week , he says that all blood tests were clear and he thought i was depressed. I'v been moody and more down because i have tried to loose weight. he asked if i wanted to go on medication to lift my mood, so i'v been thinking why i still have all these synptons, and i have come to the conclusion that the merina maybe the answer. So i got on this web site to find out if anyone had the same symptoms , had i thought about it prior to surgery i would have said no.

expatinscotland · 27/08/2007 14:18

I'd get taht ruddy coil taken OUT before I went on anti-depressants.

I hope things get better for you, lab.

I'm one of those people whose body does not get on with progesten based contraception.

lab62 · 28/08/2007 09:11

HI thank for you advice (explatin), i think my GP will try and talk me out of it , most Gp's think, that there isnt any side effects with the merina hmm. Reading other womens messages on this page, so are having the same pains, tiredness , bloating and i could go on.Iam glad i had a look on this site,i think my GP thinks its all in my head, thats why he thinks iam depressed.

lab62 · 28/08/2007 09:17

HI Expatinscotland did u try the merina and if you did! how did it effect you?

aprilfool80 · 29/08/2007 08:02

After reading all of your messages on the Mirena I have made my mind up to have mine taken out!!!! I cannot cope another day!!! I had mine fitted in April after my last child was born in Feb. I have always had heavy periods and PMT and was assured this would help. I don't trust the pill as I have fallen pregnant twice on it!!! Like everyone was told to give it 6 months to settle (I have about 6 weeks left). Ever since I had it I have been unbearable, I am so tired all the time (my daughter sleeps 13 hour nights so not her fault) I am so cranky to my partner and the older kids, I cry, I scream, I have massive headaches, my stomach is always bloated and I have started to put on weight (if you knew me you would know I never put on weight have always bin stick thin but eat like a horse!!) I bleed every other week and have horrible cramps with it. My doctor put me on anti depressants a month after coil went in because I was a mess (Had PND with my 1st Son), the more I look at it now the less I think it is PND and more this bloody coil!!!!! I think my other half is about ready to walk out the door I am so evil he keeps telling me I have changed and he doesn't know me anymore!!! I hate to say it but I think he is right!!!! After reading all your messages I feel like crying because it has made me realise I am normal and not an evil witch or a crap mum it just my god damn hormones!!!! Thanks ever so much to the Mirena!!!!!

Timelordess · 29/08/2007 08:28

Hi,
I had the Merina put in Oct 2004 and I've jus had it removed. I'm definatly an advocate for it. It was the best ting I ever had done, until now! I had very painful and irregular periods, I had my son and then my daughter, and then the Merina got put in 6 months after her birth. Wow, it was wonderful. No peiods for 3 years, no side effects, apart from headaches, butseeing as I alerady have a brain condition that causes that, I can cope.
Trouble is, now I've had it out, and I've had 2 bleeds 13 days apart. For a min I thought I'd been cught already because the breast swelling and things, now I realise it was just hormone's coming back down to earth.
I have to admit, I will neve get it put back in, coz that was painful, but removal was so painfree, I didn't even feel it come out ah well...
It's done now, and as soon as all this stops, then we can get n with tring for numbr 3.
xxx

lab62 · 29/08/2007 08:55

Hi
I feel so much better in myself since reading your stories , it has made the decide to get rid of the coil i feel i now know what the problem is and as my hubby says he would rather me crabby 7 days a month, rather than the whole month.Aprilfool80 your not alone thats what i thought, i feel that i am content now that it isnt me going off my head and it just goes to show you that the coil isnt for everyone good luck getting it out.

HenriettaHippo · 29/08/2007 11:19

well, had mine removed this morning. Doctor said it would take a few weeks to have a period, as the lining of my womb would need to come back. Guess what, 2 hours after removal, bleeding has already started, and feels like a period!

I think this just shows how little is really understood about how even a tiny amount of synthetic progesterone, even locally secreted, affects the body's systems...

Unfortunately off on holiday this weekend, so will need to make sure I have "supplies" on hand... Still, at least I'll hopefully feel normal again.

jaden2366 · 31/08/2007 13:42

hi
i have just had my third mirena put in. yes its not pleasant having it done but i have found it amazing. this time i have had no problems with breast tendernass or bleeding.i had the last one for 5 years and the hormone was wearing off in the last year and all symptoms of pmt had begun to return. i now look forward to 5 more years of no periods or pmt marvelous

Hummingbirdy · 31/08/2007 13:56

Hi I had the Mirena fitted in June. i have just stopped spotting - that was a nightmare in itself. I am also suffering from really bad PMT I cry alot and get upset at the smallest thing, everything just winds me up! Does this sound familiar to anyone. I have also lost a lot of weight my BP is lower than normal andI have constant throbbing pain in legs esp my thighs and feet- does anyone else have this pain? Do you think i should get rid of it??

BellaLasagne · 07/09/2007 14:09

Flip! I'm glad I've found this thread as my GP has recommended Mirena to me as I'm suffering from heavy periods.

Does anyone know if all of these awful side-effects are the same that can be produced by taking the progesterone only pill? In other words, if I didn't react badly to the POP (I was fine on it) will I stand a chance of not reacting badly to Mirena?

Thanks.

BellaLasagne · 07/09/2007 18:56

anyone?

nikkinu · 09/09/2007 09:31

lucyellensmum · 09/09/2007 10:41

OMGG - i thought i was going mad!! I had my marinafuckingbastardcoil fitted last year against my better judgement. I have recently been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. I asked the doctor, could it be the coil, most likely not she says. Now i want it out, i have been spotting, having pain after sex (does anyone else have this - not straight away a good few hours after) and i hardly even care if i never have sex again, and that is not like me, my appetites before all this were mad, i used to pester DP non stop . I am soooo tired, scared most of the time, no, terrified of everything, mostly dying. My DP has had enough, he is on the verge of a nervous breakdown - you may have read my other threads recently. Now i read this and its like reading about me. My doctor says that the effects of the progesterone are localised so shouldnt be causing this. Now my ADs aren't working, my partner is threatening to leave me (we have been happy together for 15 years - until now!!) COULD THIS REALLY BE DUE TO THE COIL, OR IS IT PND OR AM I JUST PLAIN MAD???

BellaLasagne · 09/09/2007 13:17

Oh lem you poor thing.

Why don't you print some of this thread out and take it to your GP?

Hope you feel better soon, BL

lucyellensmum · 09/09/2007 13:40

No need Bella, ive made my decision, its coming out, i mean, they cant not take it out if thats what i decide! They could refuse i guess but then i will simply tell them, if they don't take it out - i will!!! I imagine they might do it then, because I WILL do it myself, i reckon i can get a grip on the strings and a good hard yank should do the trick.

Cracker · 11/09/2007 20:28

LEM - I can so relate to everything you have written. I thought I was going mad - numb, totally joyless, no libido, weight gain, thrush, sore boobs etc etc. It wasn't until I got onto this site that I realised what it was and that it had all started with the horrible coil. I had mine removed today despite massive attempts by family planning doctor to persuade me to keep it in. Will let you know if the anger goes and I start feeling normal again. I got the kids to bed tonight without shouting - could this be a new beginning?!

5kidsgoingmad · 11/09/2007 20:42

Thanks Ladies, You have all saved me a lot of agonising over which coil I should have, for the last 3 years I have had the implanon implant. I was told similar things, that I am being told about the merina i.e no periods, no weight gain. I have had 3 years of practically non stop bleeding, to the point I am now anaemic, can't remember a bloody thing, put slight weight on, get pmt, which i have never had before. angry
I was so relieved that my 3 years are up, and I want the copper coil. yippee to no hormones, wink but my doctor has said i can't have it due to the side effects of heavy periods and my anaemia, and has given me the same old line of have the merina, it stops your period.
I think I will go with my gut feeling and have the copper one, unless someone can give me horror stories for that. I have 5 lovely children but don't want anymore, but I don't see why I have to think of permenent meassures just to have a normal period. wink

Cracker · 11/09/2007 21:03

Oh 5kids - don't want to put you off with the copper coil but the only reason I ended up with the Mirena was because I bled for 3 out of every 4 weeks with the copper coil, ended up anaemic etc. Therefore the Mirena seemed like the dream solution but it really really wasn't. I wish I knew the answer. Good luck and I really hope you find some solution.

angstmum · 13/09/2007 12:54

Any advice on the mirena for menopausal women? contraception not an issue, but been recommended for extreme bleeding (as in can't go out of the house, you think that's not possible until it happens...) and irregular periods, ranging from one month to one week apart. Given that I am already on prozac due to the pmt of the menopause which used to last for 3.5 weeks a month, and am considerably overweight, reading all your comments makes me think more than twice.
Any comments welcome!

blousy · 13/09/2007 13:13

I am one of the many unhappy with the Mirena. I made an appt to have it removed after 18 months during which I've put on loads of weight for the first time ever and been permanently spotty.
Unfortunately, after the gp had spent 10 minutes dismissing all of my concerns, she tried several times to get the blardy thing out but couldn't! She couldn't get hold of the threads. So I went home traumatised, bleeding and still with the coil in!
If I thought I could, I'd pull it out myself!
