Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

I'm having another one put in next week!

I loved it. The first time I had it I went from PMT monster bitch from hell and 7 day periods, plus awful ovulation pain with migraines then too, 3 dayer migraines with vomiting, to Mrs Sweetnes and Light.

Unfortunately, a smear pulled it down into my cervix and I got pg - the only reported case of it failing in all of 2003! And I say unfortunate, but my lovely dd2 is not an unfortunate addition at all.

I had another one inserted at 8 weeks pp, and removed a year later as I was still suffering from a very painful and hard to manage ongoing kidney condition which had been pregnancy related - they thought taking the coil out might help. It didnt.

I have now decided, (as the PMT monster, 7 day periods and migraines have returned) to have another.

I do feel that the people who have a great time on the mirena, like me, dont post on threads like this. But I honestly think it was a great help to me - no weight gain (well I'm pretty fat anyway so not as you'd notice!!), no spots, no cramps, very light periods, verging on not there at all (and at the moment I am flooding with clots and changing not a tampon but a mooncup hourly!) and the fabulous lack of migraines which I have been having since my periods started at age 12 (and thats an awful 24 years ago!).

Looking forward to having another one in - hooray!

Hi all! I'm new to this site! Just wanted to let everybody know that I am hopefully having my Mirena coil taken out tonight! I booked an appointment with the Family Planning Clinic who fitted it, I just want to be rid of it! After reading loads of womens experiences on here about it, I realised "Yeah, I am a moody bitch who's put on weight, got spots and has lost their sex drive too" so I'm putting it all down this flipping Mirena! I'm hoping they will not question it tonight and just take it out but there's bound to be a complication that means I have to keep it longer. I've had nothing but bleeding, spotting and discharge since it was fitted almost 2 years ago. I've been tested for the common diseases but they've all come back negative. I haven't wasted the doctors time because I know they will just say it's a common side effect of the coil. If I still have probs after then I will go to see the doctor. I really want to have another baby too so that is what I will say tonight. Hubby is not too keen on more babies but that's another story, he'll soon come around! Catch you all later you lovely ladies! xxx

Hi, I had a mirena coil fitted 10 days ago, it was really painful when it was fitted then I had light cramps and discharge for 7 days, after this I started having heavy bleeding and lots of pain my doctor said I was having a period (I had only had one 15 days before) and that the coil had to regulate its self! But over the weekend I haven't been able to stop crying, I have been so depressed that I haven't been able to leave the house (there is no reason for this). Could some one please tell me if they think this is to do with the coil?

Flumpybumpy · 09/07/2007 10:55

Had my Mirena fitted 6 weeks after having DS. All fine at first then started to cramp badly. Went to GP who sent me for a scan. Showed coil was 'stuck' the side of my uterus and woul dhave to be removed. Told no chance getting PG whilst waiting for appointment for get it taken out. Had it taken out (GP did PG test just before hand) bled very badly 5 days after taken out, phoned GP turns out I was pregnant and was miscarrying .

I will not be having another one fitted.

I was due to have a merina coil fitted 2morrow.
I was told it was best if it was fitted while i was on my period. Having read all the above I have been put off and decided not to have the coil fitted.
I suffer heavy periods which although only last 4 days are like niagara falls! I suffer terrible PMT, nasty monster bitch mood swings etc.
I have self prescribed oil of evening primrose (1000 dose)and vitimin b bought from my local sainsburys store. I have been taking them for 2 weeks and my moodiness/anger/hissy fits are a distant memory. My tender breasts are no longer a problem, I know it will not solve the problem of the heavy periods but just those 2 pills a day has made a hell of a difference to me and my personality! Has anyone else tried these remedies??

Hi
I am 9 wks post partum & breastfeeding my son, I had the mirena fitted 3 wks ago.I was still having my pp bleed(angry) when it was fitted.since then the bleeding hasnt stopped.I have now been bleeding for the whole 9 wks since giving birth,(angry)(1 wk for every month I missed being preg lol)my gp says that it is a combo of pp bleed & the mirena.she said if it doesnt stop in a couple of wks to go back & she wil think about sending me for tests. Is this normal & am I worrying about it unduly?

wishywotz · 17/07/2007 16:42

JustJill sorry to hear of your troubles.

Just to recap - I didn't get mine fitted. Instead I went back and had good chat with FPC and got a diaphram. They said that more women are having coils mainly because of cost/time etc cheaper to manufacture/supply.

The cap/diaphram companies are slowly decreasing stocks and their products. They can not compete. It appears we may not have as much choice as we once had.

slinkyjo · 17/07/2007 16:43

i had my coil fitted three weeks ago and im loving it i havent had a single problem yet thank god

divastrop · 17/07/2007 16:58

just realised i posted on this thread a while ago.

i had my mirena coil removed after 3 weeks.i felt better within a week, lost some weight, wasnt as bloated etc.

i had it replaced with a copper coil, that was about 10 weeks ago now and i havent had any problems atall, apart from my af taking a while to come back having been messed up by the mirena coil.

i have now lost all the weight i put on with the mirena, and just need to shift the weight i put on in pregnancy

chocolatekimmy · 17/07/2007 16:59

I had one fitted at the end of June - hardly felt a thing when it was done and just a couple of mild cramps for about 24 hours and very light bleeding. I am now having some light bleeding - not sure if its a proper period. Skin has been a bit spotty in places but otherwise everything is fine so I would definitely recommend it.

divastrop · 17/07/2007 17:00

mags-i was bleeding almost constantly after having the mirena fitted, all is back to normal since having it removed.

ladymac · 17/07/2007 17:00

My experiences with the Mirena were very good. I had no weight gain and my previously heavy periods became much lighter without stopping altogether. I also had fewer PMT symptoms.

I had it removed after 5 successful years in order to try and conceive, had 2 normal cycles then became pregnant with baby no 4. She is now 3 months old, and I will definitely have another one fitted as soon as I can find time to get to the clinic!

DJGemini · 17/07/2007 20:28

Lisa69 & anyone interested..
I have tried alternative herbal supplements. Like yourself I was starting to become the bitch from hell! (blush) I am a different person now that I take high dose evening primrose & Agnus Castus daily. They help balance out my hormones.

Without the agnus castus I notice the mood swings straight away. I'm not on any form of contraception, although I have considered the coil,
Before my son (2.5)was born, I had long periods (6-8 days)heavy like you wouldnt believe, terrible breast tenderness, excruitiating cramps! I now have regular, medium to heavy, 5 days long, no tenderness, bearable cramps.
It's like childbirth has given me a 'clear out' excuse the phrase!
I do not want any contraception that brings back any of the problems.
Condoms it is! unfortunatly..

cromum · 18/07/2007 11:11

Hi

I had mine fitted July last year and everything has been brilliant, cant say I have any bad effects until this month and I have had a headache for 5 days and spots on my back which I never normally have and now I am starting to wonder if its the coil?

bluevegas · 20/07/2007 22:11

Hi there! I have three great kids and would love a fourth but hubby feels differently!
Have had a mirena coil for nearly a year and although my periods are almost nil I still know that I have regular cycle. I can feel when I am ovulating and a bit of spotting happens every month.
I was very fertile before having this coil. Could I possibly become pregnant with it in?
I am exhausted most of the time and have developed acne and every month I get really moody just before my spotting starts so it's basically like it was before the coil.
I guess what I'm asking is ( in hope probably) is there anyone that someone actually knows ( not through someone else) that has become pregnant and carried baby to term with a coil in?
Thanks ladies

Hi new to this site. Can't believe what I'm reading!I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid oct 2006,due to my weight gain Dr took me off pill(which I had for yrs with no problems)as could cause heart attack apparently. I had the mirena coil fitted 2nd July 07 and have regretted it! I never had period pains, mood swings, heavy periods or any other bad period problems until this was fitted. After bleeding constantly I went back and said I can't cope with it to which dr said i have to have it in for 3mths before she'll even consider taking it out but strangely she put me back on the pill aswell to control the bleeding. If pill was dangerous to my health 6mths ago whats the difference now. Haven't stopped bleeding since having it put in and am that depressed am sitting crying, can't sleep and need to know can dr legally refuse to take it out?

mags1971 · 08/08/2007 01:14

hi
just to recap I saw my gp a couple of weeks ago & she said give a while longer again.I had my 6 wk check for the mirena at the fpc today the dr there said that all was ok,even though I am still bleeding. {now 3 mths since giving birth}She said give 6 more wks, to make it 3 ths since having the mirena fitted to see if bleeding settles. If doesn`t she will consider removing it,by then I will prob have been bleeding for 4 & half mths since giving birth. Also my moods are up & down, my older son has noticed it & my appetite has increased.Fortunately I havent put on weight but have lost 8 & half pounds by doing weight watchers, guess thats something to be happy about.

HenriettaHippo · 10/08/2007 20:08

Reading all these messages has made me decide to have mine removed. I could cope with the bleeding for 3 months afterwards, but I hate the bloated belly it's given me, the headaches that I seem to get regular as clockwork every 2 weeks for 3-4 days, the PMT symptoms (which I never had before), and the total feeling of being constantly knackered.

However, I'm on holiday in 3 weeks for 3 weeks, so wondering if removing it will mean horrible really heavy period during that time. But then I think do I want to sit on a beach with this bloated water retaining belly. Think I'd rather have the period...

expatinscotland · 10/08/2007 20:11

See, that's why I didn't go for the Mirena, because once it's in, they don't want to take it out.

They carped on and on about letting things 'settle' for up to 6-10 months.

And to me, life's too short to spend 6-10 months feeling like shit.

DitzyBitz · 14/08/2007 18:41

Oh My God.....

I thought I was losing the plot...
Had mirena coil fitted last november...since then I have felt terrible. At first the occasional headache was bareable but on my 6 wk check up was told it could last 6-10 months before it settled down and to percivere..well 9 months on I have been back to my doctors on several occasions complaining of gererally feeling like shit..I feel tired all the time my moods are massive my weight has balloned the headaches come think and fast and last for days all most blacked out driving on motorway....told all this to my doctor who took blood for just about every test going thankfully all clear ...!!!!So what is wrong with me... Thats it the coil gets it... straight back to FPC to get this sucker OUT...!!!!!

Thanks ladies

Capers · 17/08/2007 10:32

DitsyBitz - Hope you notice a dramatic improvement in the way you feel once you've had it removed. Please report back!

I had the Mirena for about three months, and it was taken out a few weeks ago. I have never been a good candidate for hormonal contraceptive but was persuaded to try this because of the lower and more localised effects of the progestogen. Unfortunately, it has been my worst - and will definately be my last encounter with synthetic hormones of this kind. I really thought I was having a nervous breakdown - depression, anxiety, violent outbursts, uncontrollable crying, withdrawn, nighmarish pre-occupation with death ad dying - etc.....! GP noticed my weepiness at a routine visit and the whole PND machine was kicked into action. Thankfully, I decided not to take any anti-depressants until the Mirena was taken out of the equation, and lo and behold that joyless, tired blank space has been replaced by me again (with all my old, nice familiar neurosis!)
