Mirena coil

Lizzer · 07/01/2002 12:41

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

I had the normal coil put in as this didnt affect me last time, and have been given condoms to use for the 1st 6 weeks. But as I have no sex drive, I dont need them

I had a sort of period (or light bleeding)straight after and then it stopped.

Now I am getting spotting, but this isnt so bad, just means I have to wear a panty liner, no hardship there.

I know a few things have got better, my skin has cleared up and I'm not getting any spots (I used to get under skin spots on my upper arms, loads of them), I would also get Acne that has stopped. My back doesnt play up as much, I still get backache at period time, but before I was getting it all the time.

The only thing I dont know if has changed is my mood swings, I suppose they have as I'm not barking at my kids, but we have family things going on so I'll know more when they are sorted.

Hope everyone is well.

Hope things continue to improve for you ronniebaby, I'm sure they will.
I had very slight spotting when I whipped my mirena out followed by a normal period a month later. The next couple of months were pretty heavy, now it has settled to how I was pre coil.
Good luck whoops.xx

I'm back & it's out!!!
The doctor managed to find the threads eventually! don't know how but it did hurt a bit but not as much as it did going in!!!
They asked why I wanted it removed so I explained! and also that we had decided on the possibility of whoops no. 3!
On the way out she told me good luck and asked me if I wanted any condoms!!!!
Just hope it was the cause of my problems and that I get back to normal soon!

2ndtime · 23/10/2006 21:36

Well done Whooooops. Glad it went ok for you.
I'll look out for you in the pregnancy bit then! How exciting. I love the trying to get pregnant bit.*(even though I know DH says your not actually trying!)
Keep us up to date on how you feel in the next few weeks. If you're anything like I was Mr.Whoooops had better watch out! Baby whoopsie could be here sooner than he planned.

just found you, tried 2 read as many messages as poss, had mirena fitted 7 weeks ago, my worst worry is my eyes they seem to be blarey, been 2 docs said not caused throgh coil has anyone had similar problems, must say having sore boobs, stomach cramps and headaches,

nothotforit · 29/10/2006 16:52

Hiya

I've been trying to find this thread for ages!
I had a mirena fitted a month ago and since then absolutly no sex drive and slightly mad mood swings... help! should i have it out?
Does the normal coil effect mood/ libido as much or is it the hormones in the mirena???

2ndtime · 29/10/2006 17:29

Yup. Had eye problems too! Massive problems with vision. Diagnosed as optical migraines and had to get glasses. Since getting the damn thing out not had a single migraine and only were glasses when I'm tired.
I've not had an ordinary coi, but from what I've picked up on here they dont seem to cause any of these probs, but can cause heavier bleeding.

2ndtime · 29/10/2006 17:31

Wear. Doh.

2ndtime · 29/10/2006 17:32

Coil! Double Doh!!

Ronniebaby · 29/10/2006 21:21

nothotforit - I had the mirena, have now had it removed and the ordinary one put back in, and there arent any side effects as there arent any hormones in this one, but as stated periods are heavier, but I have to say that is a small price to pay for getting me back, I still dont have any sex drive, but as 2ndtime said it can take 60 days at least, so here's hoping

jujuberry · 05/11/2006 22:25

I first had the Mirena coil put in August 2000 and within six months I had gained almost one and a half stones and lost my sex drive, become very depressed and anxious with horrendous mood swings. My relationship broke up. I had three young children and had always gone back to a size 10 quite quickly after birth [even with twins].
I couldn't believe how much weight I put on but I persevered with the coil because at the time I didn't know about these side effects as my GP convincend me it was impossible for the Mirena to cause weight gain as the hormone was only released in tiny amounts!!!!
Around four years into my coil I started to lose weight and feel happier.....I guess this was due to the hormone running out of supply. I had it removed after five years in August 2005. Lost weight so quickly it was unbelievable.
Stupidly after getting involved in a serious relationship this year I have had it put back in as thought it was maybe worth another trial.
HOW I REGRET this decision. The insertion was September and is is not the start ofNovember. I am so anxious and low the whole time. Gained weight rapidly. Have gone up a bra size and they are constantly tender to the touch. I have no libido whatsoever. My head is so bad it is like a big black cloud hanging over and whilst driving back from airport this morning I thought about driving my car into a brick wall to end the way I was feeling. Ireally can't cope any more an am going to have this damn coil removed asap.
I feel I am giong to ruin my current relationship with my awful mood swings and lack of libido. I feel overweight, pufffy, ugly an having the biggest feeling of doom and glood hanging over me.
SUCH a reliefe to find this thread of messages to read that made me at once feel "normal" as my GP kept insisting all my symptons were nothing to do with it an she put me on antidepressants which do nothing either really.

Has anyone ever become pregnant whilst having had the Marena coil? I got married a few weeks ago and suffered from travel sickness whilst on honeymoon (I have never suffered from it before!), and it hasn't gone even though we've been home nearly a week now. Help???!!! Should I get a test or is this a side effect? I have had the Marena for 3 years now

sarah70 · 07/11/2006 01:54

By the way my sex drive has gone the other way since having had the Marena - I want it all the time!!!!

loopyli · 09/11/2006 12:53

hello everyone, im new 2 this & would like 2 know if anyone has had their coil removed i have the merina, but would now like 2 try for a baby, so first question does it hurt 2 have it taken out as having it put in was quite uncomfortable i thought & secondly does anyone know how long it can take 2 get pregnant after!

please help!! (smile)

2ndtime · 09/11/2006 16:47

Yes sarah 70,you can get pregnant with a mirena coil in, I'd be doing a test if I were you!
jujuberry, I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a bad time with your mirena. Sounds very much like the way I was. Get the damn thing out as soon as you can, and if your doc won't do it tomorrow, do it yourself, I did. No pain at all. I lost 10lbs in a week & felt like a human being for the first time in over 5 years. Doctors are liars. Mirena coils wreck womens lives!

sarah70 · 10/11/2006 01:12

Thanks 2nd time, will do one tomorrow. Still feel crap, went to the docs and she said I had 'Honeymoon Cystitis' - and because I felt sick all the time, not just mornings, I couldn't possibly be pregnant!!Have had cystitis, and know it's definitely not that!

2ndtime · 10/11/2006 20:45

Hi sarah, I've been sick as a dog with cystitis so it could be that.
Would you like a honeymoon baby? I know you weren't planning one, but I wasn't either and did a pregnancy test as soon as I arrived home from honeymoon and it was +ve! She's 7 now and as honeymoon reminders go she's amazing!

2ndtime · 10/11/2006 21:04

Hello loopyli. Sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you!
Having your mirena removed is painless. I had one out at the Gp And pulled the other out at home and can assure you there was no pain either time. It takes
about 60 days for all the hormones to leave your body so you should be back to full fertility in a very short time. Good luck!

sarah70 · 11/11/2006 00:17

Thanks for the advice 2ndtime, did a test this morning and it was -ve!Didn't really want a honeymoon baby as I've got 3 kids already. Started on antibiotics today, so hopefully should feel better soon. Can't believe how many people have side effects from Mirena - mine was a godsend as I was 'housebound' due to flooding every month, and since having it in I've felt like a new woman!! My boss has had problems with hers too, in fact I recommended her to this site

ROSE3 · 12/11/2006 20:50

Hi everyone!
I have a appointment in 2 days to have a mirena coil fitted. It took a long time to make the decision after lots of chats with my GP. But I only just looked it up on the web, and all I've seen is lots of bad expeinces. Does anyone have any positive comments/experiences about it? I'm in 2 minds now but i need to do something very quick. Help!

All I would say is that if you do decide to have one fitted you are now well aware of what the potential problems could be. If they arrise, get is out asap.
If there is an alternative for you (non hormonal coil?) go for that instead.

Best of luck!

LIZS · 12/11/2006 20:56

Remember as with most things people are quick to critcise , slower to praise. It isn't without its side effects (as with most contraceptives especially hormonal ones)which vary from one to another. I'm due to have my 2nd fitted in a couple of weeks. For me it is convenient and I've had fewer, lighter periods so that seems to outweigh some of the downsides. According to my gp those who experience problems are probably not ideally suited to having it in the first place.

hth

ROSE3 · 12/11/2006 22:07

thank you for the advice. i know there are other options. but this seemed the best one as i suffer with heavy periods and am completely rubbish at taking the pill. got my thinking cap back on for now!!
